Katana was Huxley’s cousin. She had stage-two breast cancer and had been pregnant with Shaw’s baby. Shaw was the newest member of the Dixie Wardens MC, having prospected for a solid year before he’d been asked to come on.

He’d done the prospecting process right. Meanwhile, there’d been six other men—Koen, Creed, Weaver, Odin, Gentry, and myself—that’d kind of skipped the process and slid right into our club spots due to our defection from prison.

Well, everyone else.

I’d been pardoned out thanks to the new evidence clearing me of the murder charge.

Anyway, Shaw had gotten Katana pregnant.

Katana had found out that she had stage-two breast cancer and had thought about not fighting it. But then she’d had her pregnancy confirmed, and she’d decided to fight.

With that baby now gone, Katana hadn’t wanted to fight any longer.

From what Huxley had shared about his family, the line of women, starting with his great-grandma, had all contracted breast cancer. Katana had seen her grandmother, mother, and sister waste away from the disease.

And no matter how hard they tried, they always died.

Katana hadn’t wanted that for herself.

Shaw was probably losing his shit.

Shaw had become really good friends with Katana over the last few months of her battle with cancer.

Now, he was losing his friend and his child all at once.

“That’s awful,” Charleigh said softly. “I don’t know her well. But I know of her. We graduated a few years apart. But she was a great person from what I hear.”

“The best,” I agreed.

Long minutes passed as we watched the practice on the field below.

We were waiting to have an owner meeting along with the board, and there was one pain in the ass that hadn’t arrived yet.

The doors behind us opened and a board member came out. “Turns out that Seraphina won’t be arriving today after all.”

My phone started to ring.

Over and over again.

It would end then start right back up again.

“Answer it,” Charleigh urged.

I placed the phone to my ear just as I heard Jayne Gillespie say, “Seraphina was in a car wreck.”

“Hello?” I answered.

“Court?”

I paused at the sound of the devastation in the woman’s voice.

“Yeah?”

“This is Eddy,” she said softly.

“Oh, hey Eddy.”

Eddy was married to Weaver, another club member. But she was also the coach of the Cowgirls.
