Gavin’s face turned purple. Before he could fully erupt, Sawyer continued.
“We’re preparing for our next scene. The wedding dinner.”
Gavin and I looked at each other.
“Someone should go check on Bea,” Gavin muttered, then shoved past me to stomp back over to the other side of the house.
“Don’t take too long,” Sawyer called after him, then turned back to me.
“You weren’t here, so I stepped in for some b-roll stuff,” I told Sawyer, keeping it vague. I figured I’d have plausible deniability if I mentioned it. He grinned.
“Juliet mentioned that. Worst case, we can do some reshoots if we need to.” I studied his face. His eyes were glazed over, as if he weren’t really here. Was what Gavin said about starting that fire at Andi’s work true? Dread flooded my chest, knowing that it was. “Juliet’s working on dinner, and then we’ll film the dinner scene. I have some surprises in store.”
Something about the way he said it made me think any surprises he had weren’t ones I wanted. I stared at him for a long moment. While I still couldn’t pinpoint it, Gavin was right. The Sawyer we grew up with was gone. He was fully aware I’d bedded the object of his obsession, and yet he was acting like my friend. Why?
“I didn’t forget,” he said, as if reading my mind. He narrowed his eyes at me, and it was then I noticed his pupils were dilated. Maybe it was drugs. Or maybe he’d finally snapped.
“We’ll deal with it soon enough. I just want to get this movie done, and then you and I can have a little heart-to-heart.” His last words were cold and dry, sending another chill down my spine. Why did I feel like he meant that literally? He turned and left, and Juliet smirked over her shoulder before bounding after him. What was her motive here?
I followed behind, not intentionally going in their direction, but it was the only exit. As I passed through the set to check on Bea, I thought carefully about Sawyer and Juliet. Obviously, they weren’t to be trusted, but there were so many questions that needed answered. We reached the real kitchen, and Juliet stopped short.
“Where are you going? Dinner is almost done,” she whined as Sawyer kept moving, leaving the room. I continued after him, leaving the warm, rich smell of food behind us. Any other time, I’d be licking my lips and preparing to chow down, but the very idea of eating something she’d prepared made me ill. The more I thought about it, the more I wondered if it had been her who locked Lux in that chest.
But if it were her, the motive wasn’t jealousy; it was something much more sinister. I just didn’t know what. My mind went to Lux, and guilt flooded my chest.
Everything had moved so quickly we’d hardly talked about her today. She’d been killed just yesterday, and now it was like that was nothing. Just the start of a horrible week—if we made it that long. Sawyer still had that gun, and with his mind the way it was, I didn’t feel safe.
None of us were.
“I’m going to see my wife,” Sawyer told her.
A low rumble of jealousy flared in my chest, and a small twinge of satisfaction curved my lips into a smirk.
Technically, she was my wife, if we were focusing on the paperwork.
But I wasn’t about to point that out just yet.
Not until he was disarmed, at least.
My heart skipped a beat, thinking about that.
My wife.
I shook the idea away. I was jumping way too far ahead.
Juliet scrunched up her nose. “Don’t call her that. It’s creepy.”
“To get the best out of us all, we need to go method. Until this movie is over, she’s my wife, and you’re just a jealous bitch.”
I bit my lip, not wanting to expose myself as eavesdropping on their argument. It felt like I was on the verge of fitting another piece into this puzzle. So maybe he hadn’t lost his mind, but he was just trying to get into the movie. I continued my trek to the living room, and when I walked in, the energy was still and tense. Andi was the only one in there.
“What’s wrong? Is she getting worse?” I asked, looking at Bea. “Where are the guys?”
Andi turned to me with sad eyes.
“Gavin set off another trap.”
