“Did you name them yourself?” she asked.
“Toby was already named. I tried to change it, but he was too used to the original name, and I started to feel bad. Blair came from my favorite movie.”
“The Blair Witch Project.” She smiled.
I grinned. “You remembered.”
“Of course.” She reached for the remote again and turned on Jaws. We settled onto the couch. Andi offered me some of the blanket, and as I spread it out and slid under, I caught her eyes drifting down my chest. I grinned and stared until her gaze drifted back up, meeting mine. Her lips formed an O, and she quickly looked away. Feeling bold, I lifted the dogs and moved them to the other side, sliding over to Andi.
“So, what’s going on with you and Sawyer?” I asked, fighting the urge to put my arm around her and pull her close. It was one thing to wrap my arms around her at a bar out of town and fuck in a hotel. Having any sort of intimacy that Sawyer could catch? I don’t think either of us wanted to risk his wrath.
Andi sighed and shook her head. “Did you know he went and bought my mom’s old storage unit?”
“Yeah, I was there. It’s in our shed.”
“No, it’s all upstairs in the third room. Sawyer started unboxing it and was trying to...” She grimaced. “I don’t even know what he was trying to do. He’s acting like he wants to be together again, but—”
I stopped breathing.
But what, Andi?
But. What?
She sighed and turned to me, shaking her head. “That’s never going to happen.”
“Because...” I gulped. Despite Sawyer’s lights being off, I didn’t trust that we could talk freely.
“A lot of things. Your mom hates me still. Saw her today at the free store. That was awkward.”
I laughed dryly. “I bet. She’ll never acknowledge that Sawyer isn’t perfect.”
“No, he is not.” She sighed. “I shouldn’t have let it get as far as it did. We’re not compatible. I never should have agreed to marry him, let alone walk down the aisle.”
Hope swelled inside me. So, she didn’t have any interest in Sawyer anymore. Could that mean she might have interest in me someday?
I had no idea what to say regarding her past with my brother—but I agreed with her.
“Honestly, I kind of like being single.”
The soaring in my chest faltered. Maybe not.
“Do you date a lot in the city?” I raised an eyebrow.
“Not a lot. I have dated. The last guy I was with was kind of...” A slow smile crept over her face, and I found myself matching her grin.
“The best you’d ever had?” I teased.
My comment caught her off guard, and she laughed. Oof, what a hit to my ego.
“He was good, don’t get me wrong. The act itself was...” She shuddered. “Toe-curling good. But it’s kind of complicated, you know?”
Oh I knew. I fell back deeper into the couch. I’d thought about the implications every day since that night.
What I’d say when I saw her next. What we’d do if Sawyer found out.
Did I want that? Did she want that?
So many what-ifs, and yet...here we were, with nothing answered.
