He pulled her tightly against his chest and tangled his tongue with hers. His other hand slid up and covered one of her breasts, making them both groan.

He released a few buttons, so he was able to slide his hand in and feel and cup her breast. He used his fingers and thumb to caress and cup her and stroke her nipple. This went on until someone rang the doorbell.

“Shit, he was fast,” Roman lifted his head and cursed, making Beth laugh. He stood and set her on her feet. “Could you stay in here? I don’t want him to know whose house it is.”

Beth shrugged. “Sure. I have paperwork I can do.”

An hour later, Roman walked back into the office and sat down.

“It’s done.”

“Wow, that was fast.”

“Aiden’s really good. That’s why I fought to get him. He set up cameras in every position, so we’ll be able to see everything. He was a genius. I can’t see the cameras, and I know where they are. It’s motion-activated, and my phone will alert me when anyone goes down there, and it will also be taped at the station if we need it to use for evidence.”

Beth relaxed back in her chair behind her desk. “I really hope it’s nothing.”

“Me, too.”

“I’m going to go take a quick shower. Jayden should be home soon,” Beth said and stood.

Roman stood and caught her before she walked out. He turned her to face him. “I don’t want you to worry about this anymore. We’ll get this figured out.”

“I know.” She stood on her tiptoes and kissed his lips. “I’ll be right down.”

He watched her walk away and felt his anger build. If Evan was doing something wrong, Roman would do whatever he needed to do to get the man out of Beth and Jayden’s life. If the guy was somehow putting them in danger, he’d have to hold himself back from killing the man.

Beth and Jayden were his, and he’d do whatever needed to be done to protect them.

Chapter Twenty-One

A few weeks later, Roman sat at his desk, doing the mountains of paperwork he always had to do when his phone went off. He glanced at it and then looked at the clock. “What in the hell would Evan be doing at Beth’s at 10:00 in the morning?” he growled.

He watched Evan move to the far wall in the darkest part of the basement. He bent and took a flashlight out of his toolbox and shined it on the block wall.

Roman couldn’t see anything and was shocked when Evan pushed on one side of a block, the front of it tilted out, and a space opened up behind it.

He felt his anger grow. “How in the hell did you do that, you son of a bitch?”

All he could see was what looked like the inside of the cinder block before Evan stuck his hand in and pulled out a canvas bag. He crouched and took the tray out of his toolbox, lifted a few things from the bottom, and stuffed them into the bag.

Evan stood up and stuffed the bag into the compartment in the wall and then pushed the front of the block back in place. He put his toolbox together and then turned off his flashlight and left.

Roman sat back in his chair. He didn’t know what to think about what he just saw, but he knew Beth wasn’t going to be happy. He’d gone beyond unhappy. He was furious that he would put Beth and Jayden in jeopardy because Roman knew in his gut that what the bastard was doing was breaking the law.

He needed to take a few people with him to Beth’s and see what was in the block, but he needed witnesses and someone to tape it.

He called on Aiden, who said he’d meet him over there. He called up a few other officers he trusted under his command and asked them to meet him there.

He stood, grabbed his suit jacket, and walked out of his office. He glanced and saw Evan’s desk chair empty, and nothing on the top, indicating he’d not been in that day yet.

Roman got in his car and drove to Beth’s and called her on the way.

“Hi, sweetheart. How’s your day going?” Roman asked. God, he hated to have to tell her this, but there was no way he’d keep it from her.

“Good. What’s going on? You sound angry.”

“Not angry yet. We caught Evan in your basement. He has some kind of cubbyhole in the wall. He stuffed something into it. I couldn’t tell what it was. Aiden and I, and a few others I trust are headed over there now.”
