“Yes, you can,” I interrupted.

She shook her hands, rattling the chain. “No, I can’t.”

“Do it, Freya.”

“I can’t.”

“Fine. We’ll just break your thumbs.”

I reached for her left hand, applying just a slight bit of pressure to her thumb. And she swung with her right, snapping the center chain in the middle.

“Oh.”

“Yeah,” I drawled. “See what a little fight gets you?”

“You were going to break my finger,” she accused.

“It’s a thumb, and I’m still planning to do that.” I bounced my hands, weighing the options for her. “Broken thumbs or broken cuffs, Frey. What’ll it be?”

Her hazel eyes filled with concentration as she attempted to stare the cuffs into submission. She slid her fingers between the metal and her wrist, peering at me before she yanked them apart with a growl. Once she popped the second cuff off, she tossed them in the corner of the cell.

“What now? We can’t get out.”

I pulled the sleeve of my shirt up to my elbow, chuckling as I melted the thin icy patch to expose a key.

“Where did you get that from?”

“Does it matter?” I stuck my arm through the bars, inserting the key and twisting the lock open.

“No. Let’s get out—”

“We’re not leaving yet. I told you, we have shit to do down here.”

She cautiously stepped over the threshold. “Then why are we in the middle of a jailbreak?”

“We can’t find Nate and Amelia if we stay in the cell. But we can’t come back to the cell and pretend like we never left if we fuck the door up.”

“You mean, if you fuck the door up,” she corrected. “Where are the wards?”

I shrugged as I began searching for Sloane’s parents. “I guess he forgot to put them up.”

“How long have you been planning this?”

“Oh, I’m not. I’m channeling my mate.”

“What does that mean?”

“You’re asking a lot of questions.”

She cocked her head, waiting for an answer.

I rolled my eyes. “I’m winging it. Letting the pieces fall where they may, or where I force them to fall, depending on the situation.”

“That doesn’t make any sense.”

“I’m well aware of that,” I acknowledged, reaching the end of the cell block.

And that was where we found Nate and Amelia.
