I turn my attention back to the photograph.

Detective Bronson is ridiculously handsome. Dark hair. Broad shoulders. A strong jaw. And a pair of eyes that seem to be looking directly into my soul.

Or perhaps examining it for evidence.

Either way, I’m interested.

“What do you think he’s like?” I ask.

“Single, presumably.”

“Very funny.”

“Handsome. Probably emotionally unavailable. Might own handcuffs.”

My gaze snaps to hers.

She bursts out laughing.

“Oh, honey. You are so predictable.”

“I’m simply appreciating the tools of his profession.”

“Sure you are.”

I flip the program closed before she can see how thoroughly I’m appreciating them.

Across the ballroom, the lights dim momentarily, signaling that the auction is about to begin.

The event is being held at one of the nicer hotels on the Las Vegas Strip, which means everything is dripping in expensive decorations, sparkling lights, and enough champagne to make people forget they’re spending outrageous amounts of money on dates with strangers.

All for a good cause, of course.

And, in my brother’s case, because his sister is an exceptionally persuasive woman.

I spot Tyler standing near the stage, looking like he’d rather be undergoing a root canal.

Excellent.

“There’s my brother,” I announce.

Lenora follows my gaze. “He looks miserable.”

“He’ll survive.”

“You really did guilt him into this, didn’t you?”

“Absolutely.”

Tyler has spent years telling me I should put myself out there. Meet someone. Go on dates. Stop spending my evenings watching murder documentaries while eating donuts.

As though there is something inherently wrong with that lifestyle.

So when I learned that the charity bachelor auction needed additional volunteers, naturally, I thought of him.

What kind of sister would I be if I didn’t give him the opportunity to practice what he preaches?

“He’s going to kill you,” Lenora says.
