“Why are you thanking me?”
“Because you’ve been so kind. I’m not sure why, but I feel safe with you, comfortable even, as if we are friends. I don’t usually warm to people that quickly, and it’s surprised me.”
“Same.”
We are so close, breathing the same air, and a flicker of desire lights in her eyes as she whispers, “I appreciate you, Jason Prince. Your listening, the way you care, and the wine. Did I mention how much I appreciated the wine?”
“No, but as it’s so important to you, perhaps you’d like a refill.”
“I would.”
She smiles, a genuine one, and despite wanting to remain exactly where I am, I lean across and lift the bottle, pouring it almost to the rim of the glass.
As I set the bottle on the counter, she says softly, “This is what I dreamed of. Returning home to someone and not an empty house. To talk about my day, share conversations, and relax. Is it strange that I’ve only met you twice and yet it’s as if we met before? Perhaps in another life. Who knows, we may go back centuries and many lifetimes, always together in different bodies, but our souls never change.”
We are close again. There is hardly any space between us, and she is gazing into my eyes like a siren. I have been captured, seduced, and enslaved, and for a man who is usually fully in control of his emotions, suddenly, I’m floundering.
CHAPTER 23
SOPHIE
I’m not sure why, but I mean every word. It’s as if Jason Prince is my soulmate. I sense a connection with him. Safe, happy even and an attraction so intense I’m surprised at it myself.
He is so gorgeous on the eye. My dream fantasy, minus the leather, of course.
He is everything I want in a man, and his power is comforting.
When he asked about my day like he meant it, I was slain. The wine, the genuine concern, and the way he eagerly accepted to help me out with the problem regarding Sam meant more than he will ever realize. I have been on my own for so long now that I’ve forgotten what it’s like to share.
The trouble is, what I want to share most with him is a kiss right now. Not since Angel have I experienced such a desire to be close to a man before. My heart is fluttering, my blood hot as it passes through my veins and my panties are drenched.
It’s not due to the protective vibe he shares; it’s the man himself. Every muscle sculpted, every line on his face perfectly drawn, and those eyes will be my downfall.
If only they were blue.
Merge Angel and Jason, and I would die happy. Two very different men who make up the perfect whole.
He is staring back at me with a similar lust-filled gaze, and my heart beats rapidly as he leans forward, his tone husky, “So, do we order takeout, or dine out tonight?”
I blink. Any thought of food disappeared a long time ago.
He smiles and yet doesn’t move away, and so I lean a little closer, my lips almost touching his. “Take out.”
He doesn’t break eye contact and reaches for his phone.
“Italian, Chinese, Indian, or surprise?”
“Surprise.”
He nods, pressing the phone to his ear, and as he speaks, his low murmur wraps around every delicious nerve I possess.
“Jason Prince. Yes, your super feast please, for two people. Charge it to my account.”
He cuts the call and I grin.
“So, what is the surprise?”
“If I tell you it wouldn’t be a surprise when it comes.”
