The diamond bracelet sparkles a warning on my wrist. My latest gift for accompanying assassins to a gala like this one. To reprise the role I play on repeat every day of my life, to help, to hinder and to control. My hobby, my downfall.

Only minutes after entering the restrooms I leave and head back to Giovanni, who is surrounded by women as usual.

When I approach, their gazes turn to jealous ones, envious of my life. Of the company I keep. Of my bank balance, I’m guessing.

If only they knew.

Giovanni plays his part well and smiles as he approaches, his gaze loaded with lust, interest, and with a little bit of chivalry thrown in.

“Sophie.”

He moves toward me, his hand finding mine, and he leans in, whiskey fumes assaulting my senses as he whispers, “Dance with me.”

I take his hand, my smile bright, flirty even. Always acting.

“I would love to.”

His hand slides around my waist; he pulls me to his chest, one hand resting on my back, the other on my hip. He dances well; why do Latinos dance as they breathe? In one fluid movement, effortlessly, passionately, and sexy as hell.

He drops his lips to my ear. “You must know I like you, Bella.”

My smile remains. “I know.”

His low chuckle almost makes me smile, and he tightens his hold.

“Why are we here, Bella?”

His hips sway against mine as he whispers, “We could be alone—rehearsing.”

“Because we are networking, darling. That’s all this is.”

His hand moves lower; he pulls me flush against his body, his hips gyrating against mine.

“We would be so good together, amore mio.”

“Call me when I’m ready to date. Until then, it’s purely professional.”

“You like women?”

I roll my eyes. Of course he has come to that conclusion. The great Giovanni, God’s gift to women, can’t comprehend that a woman isn’t interested in him.

“Would that bother you?”

“It excites me, Bella.”

Obviously it does, judging by the sudden interest pressing against my stomach.

“I don’t date my co-stars, Giovanni. I’m sorry, it’s my golden rule.”

“Who said anything about dating?”

His cheeky grin makes me smile.

“Friends with benefits?”

His crooked smile almost tempts me because I’m not blind. He is one seriously hot guy. A night with him wouldn’t be a bad use of my time, and I may even enjoy it.
