“It depends.” Again with the sexy sound.
“On what?”
“Whether you will be mad or not.”
“Nope, not mad, impressed. I’m going to tuck this little tidbit away for future use.”
“So why did you call?” he asks.
“I wanted to invite you over for dinner tonight. Bella is spending the night with her aunt. And Chloe is taking her straight to school tomorrow morning.”
There is a long pause. Why?
“How about if I take you to dinner tonight?”
I don’t like that idea at all. I want as much alone time with Simon as I can possibly get. How do I say that without sounding like I want his body?
“That’s a long pause, Honey. How about if I bring dinner over to your house tonight, so you don’t have to cook? And it won’t be pizza.”
“That would be great.” I grin.
“What time do you want me there?”
“The sooner the better.”
Shit, I said that out loud!
Simon just chuckles. It’s a nice chuckle. It doesn’t stop me from turning red as a tomato.
“How about six tonight?” he suggests. “That way I’ll be able to place a to-go order and pick it up.”
“Okay.”
I manage to keep my answer to one word.
“I’ll see you tonight, Honey.”
“Okay.”
His chuckle feels warm and soothing.
“Good-bye Trenda.”
Chapter Twenty-Six
I cannot get into the book I’m reading, even though it’s one of my favorites. Every time a car drives into our cul-de-sac, I peek out the window. I’ve been doing that since five-thirty. Since when have my neighbors had such an active social life? I turn on my stereo and start my playlist of soothing and romantic forties music, trying to drown them out.
Another loud car comes into the cul-de-sac and my nails try to draw blood from my e-reader.
It’s Monday, they’re coming home from work, Girl.
I roll my eyes at myself.
Really, Trenda? You forgot that? Is your mind perhaps on a six-foot-two hunk of man?
I look back down at my reader. Ah, shit, I just turned to the sex part. I can’t read this part; I’ll jump Simon the moment he comes through the door! I page past the sex, and get to the place where the big misunderstanding happens and they’re close to breaking up. If he would only just listen to her. Why won’t he let her talk? I’m about ready to throw my e-reader across the room.
I jump when Simon knocks on the door.
