“How can you be so calm?” Hannah asked Max quietly, not wanting Zephyr to notice anything about her tone of voice since he was in the living room playing with his Hot Wheels.

“I’m calm because I’m putting a stamp on the last of Meghan’s medical bills,” Max said.

Hannah’s eyes flared. “You know what I mean,” she said as she stabbed her finger at Max’s laptop. “Aren’t you supposed to get the last of what you need for Mr. Peterson today?”

Max reached out and trailed his fingers down Hannah’s arm. “Yes, I am. Don’t worry, it’s coming. You need to relax. I thought you were going to try meditating?”

“Meditating sucks donkey balls.”

“Hannah, I’m serious, Gideon is going to get one more affidavit for me, and then I’ll be printing it out and taking it over to Elias’ office. It should be here within the next hour. After that, all of the evidence will be complete.” Max pushed out his chair, grabbed her hand, and gave it a hard tug. Hannah fell easily into his lap.

“Zephyr will see,” she protested even as she snuggled close.

“It’s been over a month,” he whispered in her ear. His teeth scraped behind her ear and the sensation caused her to melt.

“I hate those two people,” Hannah whispered vehemently. They would have already had this house up for sale and been packing for Virginia if it weren’t for Meghan’s parents.

Max stroked his hand down the side of her body so that it rested on her hip, and then he gave her a gentle squeeze. “I’m doing something wrong if you’re thinking about something other than this.” His lips whispered against hers.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

Hannah started following his mouth, wanting more than a tease, she wanted a taste.

She grabbed Max’s head and pulled down so that she could kiss him properly. Not too properly, since Zephyr was in the other room, but enough for at least a sample. She swiped her tongue along Max’s lower lip and gloried in his faint hum of approval. He squeezed her hip harder, and sparks shot directly into her feminine core.

Hannah went still. She so wanted to move against him. It took considerable effort not to squirm when she felt his hard erect flesh against her ass, but she stopped herself.

“You’re right, Sweetheart,” Max said as he rubbed his nose against hers. “We’ll save this for tonight.”

She looked into his dark gray eyes. “So what do you think?” he asked. “Was this more distracting than meditation?”

“Well, it didn’t suck donkey balls.”

Three days later, Max was shocked to find Lark Sorensen at the front door.

“Come on in out of the rain,” he welcomed. “This is a surprise.”

“Who’s she, Dad?” Zephyr asked as he plowed into his leg and peeked around him to stare at Lark.

“She’s a friend of mine, and you’re going to have to move back away from the door with me so she can come inside.”

Lark laughed. “It’s so good to see you, Max. And who’s this?”

He heard Hannah’s footsteps coming up from the basement.

“Let me take your coat,” Max offered. Lark handed it to him as Zephyr answered her question.

“I’m Zephyr Maxwell and now my last name is Hogan,” he said proudly. “What’s your name?” Hannah came to stand behind him as he looked up at Lark.

“I’m a friend of your dad’s. My name is Lark Sorensen and I’m in town today just visiting some people so I thought I would come by and say hello.”
