A part of her dared hope he would remove the gag. Her jaw strained against the gag’s intrusion, and despite her efforts to suppress it, a trickle of saliva escaped from the corner of her mouth, and she knew he could see it.

“It’s nice to see you like this,” he said, a smile tugging at his lips, “quiet.”

Never mind.

Kira threw him her dirtiest glare.

Asshole.

The vampire laughed. “Don’t look so affronted. I have other ways to keep you quiet.”

Kira didn’t want to know what those other ways were. She followed him to the front of the house, hurrying to keep up with his steps. A carriage awaited them in the country lane. It was harnessed with a pair of horses, whose black coats were as glossy as the carriage body. She was relieved to see there was no driver.

At least I’ll be alone for the journey.

It would allow her momentary respite from the blond vampire while he drove. She walked begrudgingly to the carriage.

He opened the carriage door and offered her a hand up. She promptly refused both, raising her eyebrows at him. Really? He was being chivalrous now?

Holding her head high, Kira stepped into the cabin and sank down on the upholstered seat. She let out a long breath of relief through her nose, the tension in her shoulders easing.

Her heart fell when the vampire climbed in after her, sliding onto the seat opposite and folding his long legs.

He caught sight of her disappointed expression and explained, “The carriage is enchanted. It will drive itself.”

When she continued to stare at him, he smiled. “We don’t have to talk.”

She stared out the window silently, hating him and hating the gag that prevented her from giving him an earful.

Asshole.

Chapter 4

Carriage Ride with a Wolf

Nathaniel

Nathaniel wasn’t sure what he’d expected, but it wasn’t this. He’d taken one look at her peasant clothes and calm demeanour and considered his work half done. The last thing he’d expected was for her to bite him. He couldn’t help but be impressed.

He stared at Kira, and she stared out the window, refusing to so much as look at him as the carriage trundled down the country lane.

For his part, he could not look away. She was not only beautiful, but a force of nature, and he was completely and utterly captivated by her. Most wolves had brown skin, but Kira’s was a shade darker, an exquisite bronze that seemed to glow even in the dim carriage. Luscious brown hair pooled around her shoulders, thick and slightly wavy, and her amber eyes were riveting, with shimmering flecks of gold that he could get lost in. The few times she deemed to look at him, their fierceness gripped him, inviting him in even when the rest of her clearly despised him.

He couldn’t blame her. She had every reason to hate him and his kind. But the carriage ride was a good opportunity for them to become better acquainted—and it did not require speaking. He had so many questions for her, but for now, he was content to watch her.

Before he’d gagged her, her full lips had formed the perfect pout. He did not know her well enough to discern if this was an expression of defiance, or if they naturally rested that way, but it was unnervingly sexy.

Now, with her lips stretched and taut around the ball gag…well. There were no words to describe what it did to him to see her mouth stuffed and stretched, and the sight of the drool shining on her chin made him ache and burn.

He was just as helpless as Kira.

If only she knew.

He was tempted to see how far he could push her. She was not the type of wolf to submit easily, and he relished that challenge. But although the thought of making her bend over his lap sent heat rushing to his loins, it was not worth the risk—Kira was the type of wolf to bite first and ask questions later.

No, this was not the time for wetting his cock. He sensed that behind Kira’s fierce mask, she was scared and confused, and, as everyone knew, the kindest way to handle a scared animal was with a firm hand.

Judging by how quickly she’d submitted, the collar and gag were the right course of action, but they would lose their effectiveness over time. She was in shock, and understandably so after he’d caught her off guard in her own home. It almost felt like cheating. She wouldn’t be so easily subdued next time.
