“Are you sure there might be an omega in here, Donnie?”
“Yeah, I’m sure. This is the last address on the list. If there are any of those girls left alive, this is where they’d be.”
That’s enough for me. If there are more innocent omegas in here that need saving, I’m going in.
The Primacy has already gotten too many wins on us today. They will not get another.
“Alley Cat, please actually stay in the car this time.”
She frowns at me but doesn’t argue as I gently set the still-unconscious omega against the backseat.
“Are we super sure she’s not dead?”
“She is alive. She just needs some time to recover from whatever the hell those operatives put her through. Just stay here and look after her.”
Alley Cat nods as Zero and I get out of the car.
“There!” Zero says, pointing to one of the warehouse windows.
I see it too. A shadow walking across the frame. There’s a barely discernible light source coming from somewhere inside. Just enough that a shadow flickered when someone moved.
“We should split up this time.”
“Isn’t that how women usually wind up tied up in a basement somewhere? Perhaps you should stay behind me this time instead.”
Zero draws her katana. “Don’t worry, Wraith, I’ll protect you. And I’ll untie you if you end up in the basement.”
Funny little team I’ve found myself protecting here. And being protected by.
The warehouse is eerily empty when we first go inside. But the air is frigid. Someone has been keeping the air conditioning on even if the lights aren’t. That’s the kind of inconsistency that I notice. The kind that keeps me alive.
This warehouse isn’t vacant. It’s waiting.
Zero slinks down the hallway. We make it almost to the end of the hallway before I hear it.
Zero freezes in place as soon as I put a hand on her shoulder.
That’s when we both see it. An omega. Tied to a chair at the end of the hall.
The only problem is that she’s already dead.
“It’s an ambush!”
Zero’s words trigger instant panic in Donnie over the comms as he tries to pull up any available camera feed in the building.
A swarm of Primacy operatives floods the hallway. Assessment: me with my arsenal, and one extensively experienced alpha assassin beside me, holding her katana in front of her, the length of both her arms.
There’s no exit in the other direction. We’re cornered like rats.
This is not a problem. I’m no rat.
“Get behind me.” I sweep my arm out to push Zero back.
“Don’t be an ass,” she said, dancing away from me to position herself advantageously. “You’re not alone anymore.”
The only way out of this warehouse alive is through the onslaught of armed killers coming our way. And I intend to carve us a path.
The shots fire until my gun is out of bullets, taking several assassins down at once. After tossing the empty gun to the side, I mow through the incoming attackers with knives and bare hands.
