Any small part of me that was still debating the logistics of acting out like this is immediately swallowed whole by his words. I lower the gun, aim at his kneecap, and fire twice.

Adam screams as two bullets rip through his knee, turning his deep insults into high-pitched wails of agony that get drowned out by the music thumping below us.

He curls in on himself, screaming and screaming while rocking side to side.

"What the fuck! You're insane! Ahhh! What the actual fuck?”

Moses keeps Adam's friend down, not saying a word.

Moving forward, I lift my foot and press it over the bloody mess of the bastard's knee, then lean forward until my weight pins the broken mess to the floor.

Adam's entire macho facade fades and he starts sobbing and wailing as I hover over him.

"I'm sorry, okay! I'm sorry, man! Don't kill me! Please don't kill me! It was just some stupid joke! I'm sorry! I'm sorry."

Disgust curls through the anger in my gut as I look him up and down. "You will go back to that diner and you will apologize to her, do you understand me?"

"Yes, yes!"

"If you don't, I will come back here and I will kill you, do you understand?"

"Yes!"

"Tell me what you're going to do."

"Apologize!"

"To?"

"Th-the waitress!"

"For?" I lean further forward and Adam chokes on his pain.

"F-for being a cunt!"

"Good lad." With that, I step away from Adam and wipe the sole of my bloody shoe on the floor while he curls back in on himself, sobbing.

Then I turn and stride away. The last words I hear are Moses threatening Adam's friend to forget our faces. Cops don't bother me, but if either of them suddenly decides Layla isn't worth apologizing to, we'll have a problem.

Back outside, the crisp night air floods my lungs as I breathe deeply.

The fury warming my chest begins to dissipate, growing into the comforting sensation of satisfaction.

I've defended her honor and will only fully relax once I'm sure that little cunt has apologized to her.

Then my quiet, safe diner can go back to being the warm highlight of my week.

With Layla soothed and protected.

"Feel better?" Moses joins me, checking his gun over before sliding it back into the holster, hugging his ribs.

"Much."

"So… you want to tell me what that was really about?" Moses squints at me while the man who followed us shows me quickly that he picked up the casings from my gun.

"You know what it was about."

"I know the trigger, but you just kneecapped a cunt for talking shit about your waitress. I know you love that place, but is that all it is?"
