Travis looks over at me. “You got her?”
“Yeah.” I nod.
“Cool. Make sure she takes a shower and eats something before she face-plants into her bed.”
Evelyn huffs. “I’m right here.”
“We know,” we say in unison.
“Don’t do anything I wouldn’t do.” Travis smirks at her.
Discreetly, she raises her hand and gives him the middle finger as she rubs the side of her nose, making us laugh.
“I don’t like you two being friendly. You gang up on me.”
“Come on,” I say, pushing her toward the locker room to grab her bag.
Five minutes later, we step out of the hospital, and I swear I watch as exhaustion hits her. Evelyn stumbles as she walks. Reaching over, I steady her.
“Sorry,” she mutters.
“Here, give me your keys,” I say, holding out my hand.
“Why?”
“Because I’m going to drive you home.”
Much to my surprise, she hands them over without giving me any sass. This morning she was less amicable, but then again, she did just work a double shift.
On the drive back to her place, she falls asleep with her head leaning against the window, mouth open, snoring lightly. I laugh under my breath at the sight.
When we pull into her driveway, I shut the car off and gently wake her up.
“Evelyn, we’re home.”
Grunting, she rolls her head toward me and opens her eyes. “Did I really fall asleep?”
“You did. You even have a little drool right here,” I say, pointing toward my chin.
“Dick,” she mutters with no heat, making me laugh.
“Come on,” I say as I open my door.
We both get out of her car, and I lock it behind us before letting us into her place. I drop her keys onto her counter as I head into the kitchen.
“What are you doing?” she asks as she sprawls out on the couch.
Shaking my head, I walk over to her and pull her up. “You need to go shower.”
“I don’t want to,” she whines.
“Well, you need to change at the very least, but you smell like antiseptic and have who knows what for fluids on your scrubs. Go clean up while I make you something to eat.”
Her eyes soften, making my chest ache for some fucked-up reason.
What’s wrong with me? I can’t be growing soft for this woman.
“You’re going to make me food?” she asks softly.
