That night, miles away along the eastern boundary, Thomas stood beneath a sky clearing toward stars and felt something settle differently.

The work had gone well. The path repairs were straightforward. The men under his supervision had done as told without complaint.

That was what unsettled him.

He had expected resistance. Difficulty. Something that would justify his being there.

Instead, everything moved smoothly.

Too smoothly.

One of the younger hands mentioned it casually as they packed up for the evening.

“Lady Thornhaven came down to the road today,” the man said. “Sorted the dispute herself.”

Thomas stilled.

“She did,” he said.

“Yes. Didn’t raise her voice. Didn’t need to. They listened.”

Thomas nodded once, the information settling deeper than he expected.

Later, alone near the edge of the camp, he stared out at the darkened land and understood what he had misjudged.

Eliza did not need him gone.

She needed him present, not to shield her, not to be shielded, but to stand beside her when the work demanded it.

His absence had not protected her.

It had isolated her.

The realization arrived without drama, but it did not lack force.

Steadiness, he understood now, was not distance.

It was a choice made together.

And for the first time since he had ridden out, Thomas Grey wanted to return not because he was needed…

…but because he had chosen the wrong silence.

Chapter Twenty

Thomas returned at dawn.

Not because the work at the eastern boundary was finished, it was not, but because he had reached the point where absence no longer served the truth he was trying to preserve.

The ride back was unremarkable. The land lay as it always had, softened by recent rain, the hedgerows dark with moisture, the paths bearing the marks of use and care. Nothing announced his decision.

That, he thought, was fitting.

Hartleigh came into view as the sun crept above the trees, the house pale and watchful against the lightening sky. Smoke rose faintly from the chimneys. The day had already begun.

He dismounted at the lower yard and led his horse toward the stable without ceremony. A groom looked up, surprised.
