Ashwood cleared his throat. “The matter at hand concerns the tenant accounts and the projected yields for the coming quarter. Mr. Grey’s records—”

Eliza raised her hand.

Ashwood stopped at once.

“Eliza?” Nathaniel said, his brow furrowing.

“You won’t be referencing Mr. Grey’s records directly,” she said calmly. “You’ll reference the estate’s.”

Ashwood blinked. “Of course. I only meant—”

“I know what you meant,” Eliza replied. “And I’m correcting the framing before it becomes habit.”

Silence followed.

Nathaniel shifted slightly. “Ashwood only thought it might be helpful to have—”

“Eliza,” Ashwood interjected, careful but firm, “His Grace is under some pressure to demonstrate oversight. Transparency.”

Eliza turned to him fully now. Her expression remained composed, but something beneath it sharpened.

“Transparency,” she said, “is not the same as display.”

Ashwood inclined his head. “No, my lady. But perception—”

“Is not governance,” Eliza said. “And neither is symbolism.”

Nathaniel looked between them, his mouth opening as if to speak, then closing again. He exhaled slowly.

“I don’t wish to offend anyone,” he said at last. “I only want the household to see that things are being done properly.”

“They are,” Eliza said. “That is why Mr. Grey is not here.”

Nathaniel’s gaze lifted. “You believe his absence proves that?”

“Yes.”

Ashwood frowned. “Forgive me, but many would argue the opposite.”

Eliza did not raise her voice. She did not lean forward. She did not soften her tone.

“Mr. Grey is not a prop,” she said knowing this was the moment that would follow her. “Nor is he an argument.”

The words settled heavily into the room.

Ashwood shifted his papers. “No one intended to suggest—”

“Intent does not erase outcome,” Eliza replied. “You asked him to attend so the household might see fairness enacted. That makes him evidence.”

Nathaniel looked startled. “I didn’t mean—”

“I know,” Eliza said. “That is why I’m saying it now.”

She reached for the ledger at the center of the table and opened it, her movements unhurried.

“These figures were compiled under Mr. Grey’s supervision,” she continued. “They are accurate because he is consistent, not because he is visible. The estate benefits from his work precisely because it is not performed.”

Ashwood’s expression tightened. “You believe this will satisfy scrutiny?”
