“Don’t worry,” I assured her. “You’ll understand what I mean soon enough.”

THE AGENT

The soft crashes of the waves echoed through the breeze brushing against my face. I watched from our room balcony as the water barreled towards the shore with a sense of urgency and stretched across the sand. Slowly, it retreated backwards, as if being dragged away after trying to make an escape.

I took another sip of my wine, trying to ease the thoughts running through my mind.

Processing the story Mateo had told me was difficult. I couldn’t erase the images he’d painted in my head of the bloodied bodies and chorus of gunshots. The descriptions alone made my chest ache. I couldn’t even begin to imagine how he must feel having lived it - having those images carved into the back of his mind.

No wonder he’s so apathetic - so cold. Everyone he ever loved had been ripped away from him. Now, he practically has nothing to live for. And a man with nothing to lose is a dangerous one.

A part of me wanted to entertain the possibility of becoming his anchor, but I wasn’t sure he was looking for one. I still wasn’t quite sure what he was looking for out of whatever relationship we were building, and I didn’t want to make a fool of myself mistaking his true intentions for another. I’d had enough heartbreak over the last few weeks. I didn’t think I could handle another one.

“Oh no,” Mateo’s voice broke me out of my trance. “I’ve scared you off already, haven’t I?”

Blinking, I turned my head to look up at him, shaking off the stray water on his hands. When we finished dinner, I’d offered to do the dishes, but he swiped all of them up before I could even reach for one. He wouldn’t say it aloud, but I could tell from the look in his eye he needed a minute to recuperate from the memories he’d recalled.

“No,” I answered his question. “You can’t get rid of me that easily.”

The subtlest of twitches sparked around his mouth, the faintest ghost of a smile floating over it. Stepping closer, he wound his arms around my neck and rested his chin on the top of my head.

I relaxed in his grasp and leaned into his embrace. The thud of his heartbeat mixed in with the splashes of the ocean, working together to create a beat of its own. The sound swept away some of the thoughts rattling through my mind. In their place was a silence loaded with things I was too afraid to say.

Somehow I’m still shocked at the peace and security that accompanies being in his arms. Out of all the places to find a safe space, I never expected to find one inside of him.

“Whatever you’re thinking about: stop,” Mateo said. He moved his chin from off the top of my head and leaned down to put his lips at my ear. “Enjoy the rest of the night with me.” He pecked kisses at my ear, his lips trailing down towards my neck. His tongue traced over the skin there, and I damn near melted in his embrace.

My head lulled to the side, giving him more access as he passionately sucked and nipped at my neck.

One of his arms fell from my neck, and his hand drifted down to my breast.

I let out a sigh as his fingers circled my hardening nipple. He teasingly rubbed his fingers over it, his touch lighter than a feather. I poked my chest out further, seeking more pressure. He happily rolled his thumb over it, pinching it after every lap.

The sensation trickled down between my legs, awakening an ache between my legs. I pressed them together in a feeble attempt to soothe it.

Mateo’s hand answered the silent call, abandoning my nipple and traveling further down.

“Mateo,” I groaned when he pressed his fingers through the fabric of my dress and dipped between my thighs towards my clit. “We…we should go inside.”

“Nah,” he said. He grabbed bunches of my skirt, lifting it high enough to slip his fingers underneath it. He cupped my inner thigh and pushed my legs open. His hand slithered between them. “I’m gonna fuck you right on this balcony.”

His fingers pressed against my pussy, offering some relief to the ache forming within it.

I moaned as he twirled circles around my moistening lips. My back arched, sending my hips backwards and my ass against his dick. Through his pants, I could feel it coming alive, growing harder with every passing second. I swayed my hips in circles, giving him a taste of his own medicine.

His teeth sank into me as a quiet growl rumbled in his throat.

I flinched from the pain and tried to pull my neck away.

His arm tightened around my neck, keeping me still. The hand underneath my dress wrapped around my panties and yanked them down my thighs. His fingers returned to my bare pussy, the pads of his fingers pressing against nearly every inch of it.

Another whine left my lips as they resumed their circles, faster, harder this time. I bucked my hips against him, trying to move in sync with his fingers.

“You like that?” Mateo whispered in my ear.

“Mhm.” I bit my lip as he pushed two fingers inside of me. His thumb remained on my clit while his finger shifted up and down. I rolled my hips, pushing my pussy harder against his fingers and milking them for all they could give me. “Mateo,” I murmured as the ache grew stronger, needier.

“Tell me what you need.”
