“By surviving.”

Paramedics rush through the door.

Doc gives them Kane’s condition while they work.

I sit back on my heels.

My hands are covered in his blood.

Grant’s blood was on the patch inside the box.

Kane’s blood is on me.

Fifteen years apart, and somehow the two still feel connected.

The paramedics lift Kane onto a stretcher.

He reaches for my wrist.

One of them tries to move his hand.

I stop him.

“What?”

Kane pulls me closer.

“Vance wasn’t digging for the graves.”

“You said—”

“He was digging for what Grant hid beneath the cellar floor.”

“What did he hide?”

Kane’s fingers tighten.

“A copy of the Colonel’s orders.”

Doc moves closer.

“Did Vance find it?”

“No.”

“How do you know?”

“Because I did.”

My heart slams against my ribs.

“Where is it?”

“I moved it years ago.”

“Where?”

Kane’s gaze slides toward the lockbox.
