“Rob!”

“Annie!”

Annie?

“I’m so glad to see you, Rob.”

“Why didn’t you call to let me know you were coming?”

“I wanted to surprise you.”

Emma shuffled backwards. She looked around wondering if there was somewhere she could hide from the couple who still had their arms wrapped tightly around each other. And it was then that she noticed the similarity between the two of them. The high cheekbones, the green eyes, even the hair color was the same.

Ignoring the fact that she was half-naked, Emma made a little noise, reminding them that she was there.

They both turned around.

“Aren’t you going to introduce me, Rob?” the woman asked, laughing.

She knows exactly what went through my mind, and she’s enjoying it.

“Emma, this is my sister, Annie.”

“Anne,” the woman corrected gently.

“She’s a bigshot news anchor working in the city.”

That’s why she looks so familiar!

“I wouldn’t say bigshot. More like up-and-coming. But I do have a car waiting outside—I was just passing through on my way to a story and wanted to say hi. I still have your key and remembered your alarm code, so thought I’d surprise you. Not this much, though,” she laughed then sobered quickly. “I’m sorry, Emma, I didn’t mean to scare you.”

“That’s okay, it’s not you. I’ve been … going through some things.”

“Can you stay for breakfast, Annie?” Rob asked.

“Breakfast I could do, I guess, if it’s quick.”

“I’ll get right on it.”

For a second, watching Rob move around the kitchen barefoot in just his jeans, Emma forgot everything else around her. Then she realized Anne was looking at her, not at Rob.

“I’ll go get dressed,” she said quickly. “I’ll just be a minute.”

A delicious breakfast of scrambled eggs, toast, and blueberries was already waiting on the table by the time Emma got back.

“Are you sure everything’s okay, Rob?” Anne asked.

So they’ve been talking about me.

“It’s all under control, Sis. Don’t worry about us. Emma’s going to be just fine.”

“We’re both going to be just fine,” Emma interrupted.

“I didn’t get to report on Ford’s story, but he seems like a downright psychopath.”

Emma felt the bit of egg she’d just put in her mouth turn to dust. She hated how the mere mention of Ford still had this effect on her.

“That’s an understatement,” Rob said lightly, grabbing Emma’s hand. The public display of affection was as unexpected as it was welcome.
