“How did I get so lucky to find you?”

Her lips quirked up. “I honestly don’t know. You must have done something good in a former life.”

Her sass and confidence, coupled with the vulnerable side she only showed a very few, drew him in with every breath he took until he found himself so gone for her, that if she said she wanted the moon on a stick he’d find a way to give it to her.

He stopped himself from saying it as Marsha walked into the room. A cream velvet lounge suit and her hair in a sleek bun on her head her only nod to her usual put-together appearance.

“What do you want?” Her scathing look travelled over him and until his dying day he’d never understand what his father saw in her.

“We want to talk to you about Tarquin Green.”

Marsha went as white as a ghost at Bás’ demand. Her legs seemed to give way and she sat heavily in the wingback chair she’d occupied the previous night. Hurricane wandered off with a nod to Nadia and he moved toward the fireplace, drawn by the pictures. Nadia sat opposite Marsha and Bás was off to one side.

“I haven’t heard that name in years.”

“We understand you were friends.”

Marsha smiled and it reminded him of his brother’s sixth birthday when she’d made them all dress up as pirates for his party and she’d taken a picture, her smile sad even then.

“We were. He was my best friend and my first love.”

“You had his child.”

Marsha’s eyes flashed up in shock and fear showed on her face. “I…”

“We know about Melissa.”

Marsha sagged as if life had truly been sucked from her. “Is she safe?”

Bás chose not to answer that but mined for more information. “Did you know Carter was blackmailing Tarquin?”

Her head shot up and he wasn’t sure he believed the lie that fell from her lips. “Of course not. Carter didn’t know about Melissa.” The woman looked terrified, her hand shaking as she ripped a tissue in her hands to shreds.

“Does Melissa know about you?”

Gideon frowned, Bás knew she didn’t.

“No, she has no idea and it needs to stay that way.”

“Why?”

Her eyes glittered with tears. “Because I don’t trust them and it’s the only way she stays safe.”

“Who don’t you trust?”

She threw up her hands. “The people in charge of Project Cradle. I assume that’s why you’re really here.”

“Let’s talk about that. Who’s in charge of the organisation? Is it Hansen?”

“He is the fixer. He keeps everything running smoothly. He’s the top man’s pet.”

“Does this person have a name?”

Marsha huffed out a laugh with no mirth in it at all, her head shaking.

“Marsha, this person likely killed your son and if he finds out about Melissa, she could be next.”

She cocked her head towards Nadia and his instinct to move closer and draw her attention away was strong.
