“Thank you.” The cab pulls into my drive. “Let me get those slides for you.” I run into the house, pulling them from the closet. I hurry back, laying them at her feet. “Here you go.”

“Thank you, Highlander.” She hiccup giggles.

I shake my head, helping her to the cab. I pay him and add a tip. “I’ll see you tomorrow.”

“Tomorrow.”

I drive into her complex, looking for Proud Mary. “What in hell has this woman done to me, calling a car by its name.” I had our driver come get it and deliver it this morning.

I park beside her car and push my door open. I climb out and take the time to adjust my vest in my three-piece suit. Several women are out, taking children to bus stops or walking dogs.

“Good morning.” I smile with a nod. I look up to find Lola standing on her steps. “Good morning.”

She wags her finger around. “Do you often draw a crowd?”

I can’t take my eyes off her as I reach for her bag. “No, but I guarantee you do.”

“I have a feeling you get this reaction wherever you go.” Her eyes smolder. “Dressed like this, I may need to take a bat.”

“I was just thinking the same thing.” I step closer to her. “I’m going to have to beat them off you.”

She searches my face, smiling. “You’re so confident about me. You might want to save some of that for yourself.”

“Look at you, calling the kettle black.”

“Touché.” She rolls her eyes. “I can get my suitcase.”

“I don’t think so, Miss Turner.” I pick it up, holding my hand out for her to take. “Shall we?”

Her eyes flutter from my hand back to my face. She takes it without hesitation. “Thank you.”

“Always.” My heart thunders in my chest as we walk from her stoop to the car.

She can’t contain her laughter as she looks at my car. “Now, this makes sense.”

“What does?”

“You”—she looks me at up and down—“and an ostentatious car.”

“Please, you’re just in shock to see one from this century and without having to use your feet to make it go.” She sticks her tongue out at me. “Honey, not in front of the neighbors.”

Her eyes widen. “You’re so going to pay for this.”

I drag my eyes down her body. “Believe me, Lola, I am.”

I hold the door open, helping her in. As I round the back, I put her bag in and then get in myself. We’re at the airport and boarding the plane within the hour. She sits with her legs crossed at the ankles and to the side. Her profile is breathtaking.

I want her. Forever.

“Oh, I have something for you.” She picks up her briefcase, opening it.

I frown. “Not the kind of brief I was hoping for, but…”

“Smartass.” She pulls out a file, handing it over. “I sent this via email, but I wanted you to have a hard copy we could go over while we’re here.”

“You said hard.” I smile coyishly. “Thank you.”

“You’re welcome.” Her eyes flicker with a heat in them.
