She winces. “He’s a big boy, I’m hoping he’ll catch a break soon.”
“He sure is.”
Her mouth drops. “No, you didn’t.”
“Sorry.” I lick my lips. “I was in a loveless marriage far too long, and Lennox was exactly what I needed.”
The corners of her mouth turn up. “Must be a twin thing.”
“Can I confess something to you?”
Her eyes widen. “Only if you want to.”
“I like him, more than I should, and not because I shouldn’t.” My belly flips.
She purses her lips. “Trust me, I understand.”
“It’s just bad damn timing.”
She frowns. “How so?”
“Too soon.” My heart clinches. “One of those, what will people think.”
“Who the fuck cares? Do what makes you happy, screw the rest.”
I fight a smile as I think of Lennox. “Things are too complicated right now.”
“Be careful. I know what can happen if you wait too long to allow someone in.” She stands, reaching for my hand. “C’mon, let’s go dish on Lennox and your horrible ex-husband. Lennox could use the win!”
“I think I’ll leave out the juicy details, if that’s alright?”
She winks with a mischievous grin. “I married his twin. I’m sure they’re a lot alike. You’re a damn lucky girl.”
“You can say that again.” I bite my lip and take her hand.
“Good morning, Alice.”
“Good morning, Miss Turner.” She waves.
I stop at her desk. “Did you have a good weekend?”
“I did, my children were home from college.” She beams with pride. “How was your weekend?”
“It could’ve been better.” I give her a half smile. “Is he in?”
Her mouth sets in a thin line. “No, he called in sick.”
“Sick?” I slowly blink. “Did he say what was wrong?”
She slumps in her chair. “He didn’t. It’s his first sick day since he’s been back.”
“I’ll be in my office if anyone needs me. I’m looking over production on Charlotte.”
“Yes, ma’am.” She smiles as I wander off to my office. Several times through the day, I find myself looking at the office beside me. I try to reassure myself he’s alright and will be back tomorrow.
Then day passes quickly, and I have to admit, I’m glad. I hate being here by myself. I spent some time on making Lennox a spreadsheet of the best connections they have for O’Daly’s.
I’m thinking it should help him with contacts and to know who the hard sales are, who the best distributers are, and the best buyers. Honestly, I think that’s all he’s missing. I also want to plan a trip to Charlotte; I have some questions there.
