“Miss Turner, my twin brother, Lennox.” Lachlan nods at me.
Lola’s stunned, but she seems to recover quickly as she offers me her hand. “Your twin brother, Mister Daly.”
“Miss Turner, is it?” I take her hand, releasing it quickly as mine begins to tingle.
She fakes a smile. “It is, but you can call me Lola.”
“I’m sure most people do since they wouldn’t know your last name.” I turn to the desk, wincing.
I sit and cut my eyes at Lachlan as he observes both of us. “Lola, we recently moved our home base here, and my brother is planning to take total control. Our hopes are, you can help him get a better grip on things.”
“I think what my brother is asking is can you handle taking directions from me.” I stare at her.
Her cheeks flush. “I like to think I take directions well.”
“You’ll have to excuse us, but we don’t even have your resume.” Lachlan looks from me then back to her.
She reaches in her bag, pulling one out. “I have one here.”
“I’ll take it.” I reach for it. She leans forward, and her navy dress offers me a great shot down the front to her breasts. “Thank you.”
“Makenna mentioned you’ve worked with several local companies recently, and you are also highly recommended.” Lachlan plays nice, but I don’t plan to.
“Your resume, it’s light on experience. When’s the last time you worked?” I can’t help but wonder if you’re here to catch a rich guy like all the rest.
Her eyes are focused on my desk. “I’ve only recently begun working in my chosen field.”
“You’ve only listed one other job before your recent work.”
She nods. “That’s right.”
“Do you have an issue with working late or on the weekends?” I pin her with a glare.
Lola drops her head, and I immediately feel wretched. “No, I can work long hours and weekends.”
“Why did you leave your last job?”
She begins to fidget. “I divorced recently.”
Lachlan frowns. “I’m sorry.”
“Being married kept you from working?” Here we go.
Lola swallows hard. “He refused me when I asked to work outside his company.”
I stand, walking over to my Chess set. My blood boils with the thought of someone being mean to her, like I have been today.
“Am I missing something?” Lachlan’s head bounces between us.
Lola stands, wandering over to me. “I’m good at what I do.”
“Oh, I have no doubt you’re good.” I move my knight, glancing at her.
She shifts her feet. “I feel the same about you.” She reaches in, moving a pawn.
“Do you plan on leaving before the job is done without notice?” I move my pawn.
Lachlan gasps. “Oh, I see.”
