“I can’t believe you.” Lachlan paces the floor in front of me. “Why would you take a four-day weekend, knowing the work that has to be done with the move, hiring someone, and getting you up to speed.”

“I have everything up to date, things were running smooth, and I knew once you were home, there would be a new analyst to deal with here.”

“What are you saying, you don’t want the help?” He shoves his hands in his pockets.

“No, I’m not. I needed a break, so I took one. That’s it.”

The intercom buzzes, and I hit the switch, answering it. “Yes, Alice.”

“Your ten am is here. I’m going down to get her,” she says.

“Thank you, Alice.” I glare at Lachlan. “Well?”

“Makenna took a sick day, so we’ll have to interview this one.” He walks over to my Chess set. “Maybe if you help with the initial hiring, you’ll work better together.”

I stand and walk around the desk. “I’m sorry, but I’m doing my best.”

“You look as though you tied one on all weekend.” He narrows his eyes at me.

“I didn’t.” Lola laying on my bed pops into my mind. “I had very little alcohol, I relaxed, and I met one woman.”

“One? For the entire weekend?” He looks me over. “Well, if she fucked you up this much, I can’t wait to meet her.”

“I’m not messed up.” He points at my tie. “I just loosened it before you came in. I was tired.”

“So you didn’t sleep all weekend?” He smirks.

The thought of Lola brings a smile to my face. “I met her Saturday, then I came home Sunday.”

“How’d she take you ditching her?” He snickers as I avert my eyes, tugging on my tie to straighten it. “Wait.”

“What?” I wander around the desk, trying to get away from him. “We need to get ready. Alice will be back soon.”

He starts to laugh. “Hang on just a minute, what happened?”

“Nothing.”

He sits across from me, grinning. “Something went on.”

“She ditched me.” I keep my head down, avoiding his judgment.

He bursts with laughter. “She did what?”

“She left me in bed.”

He holds his stomach, bending over. “Let me get this straight, you picked one woman to be with this weekend, and she ditched you. Were you still asleep?”

“Fuck you.” I flip him off, as I pretend to go through files.

He ducks his head, getting a look at me. “You like her.”

“Of course, I did.”

Lachlan cocks his brow. “No, you really like her. What’s her name? Where does she live?”

“We didn’t share those things.”

He blinks rapidly. “What did you share?”
