She holds up a finger, her nail is hot pink, not a gaudy red. “GIRLS weekend, no boyfriend. I forgot to let them know I was leaving.”

“I apologize, bad joke.” Would you shut up?

She smiles, and it’s contagious. “Why do you smile every time I do?”

“Honestly?” I wait, wondering if I should go full disclosure.

“No, lie to me. I’m already breaking all the rules.”

“Your smile, it’s natural.” I immediately regret telling her.

She giggles. “Well, as you can tell by this dress, there’s not a fake thing about me.”

“You say that like it’s a bad thing.” I search her eyes, hoping to see why it may be.

Her expression dulls. “Some may say it is.”

“I wouldn’t.”

She studies me, looking surprised. “I’m not so sure.”

“What do you do for a living?” She smashes her mouth closed, shaking her head.

“We’re not discussing that.”

“No, let’s keep this what it is.” She bites her full bottom lip.

My nostrils flare. “What would that be?”

She holds up one finger again. “One night.”

“Do you mind if we get something to eat?”

She laughs. “Do I look like a girl who doesn’t eat?”

“Hang on, I have to ask something.”

Her brows knit. “You can ask. I’ll decide if I want to answer.”

“Fair enough.” I pick at my nail. “Why do you say things like that?”

She half shrugs. “Baggage.”

“I understand.”

Her brows rise. “You do?”

“Do you often objectify people you don’t know?” I fidget under her gaze.

“I’m sorry, I thought we both were playing this game.”

I turn my head, staring out the window. “This isn’t going the way I had hoped.”

“I know, it’s not what I imagined either.”

“How did you see it going?” I stare at her, watching her squirm.

Her eyes flash to mine. “Room service, lots of heavy panting, a ridiculous amount of sex, a little sleep, and lots of regrets in the morning.”
