“My son’s wife and fiancées, we count them as our own.” The look on her face as she smiles at them is amazing. “The story behind all of that will wait until the next time we get together and dish.”

Millie waves her off. “No explanation needed. I have more money to spend in Vegas thanks to the free airfare.”

“Thank you, we appreciate it.”

The few hours we’re here pass so fast, I hate to see it end. They’re all as fabulous as Reese said when she texted me to meet them. We take time to get the girls’ numbers and discuss where to stay.

“I wonder if Lan has a place there. I’ll ask Maisyn for you,” Lea offers with a smile.

Millie’s ears perk up. “Who are you people? You’re like a treasure trove of never-ending resources.”

“I’ve never thought of it that way, but I suppose we are.” Thayer laughs.

Lea types away on her phone. “Alright, folks, I need to get goin’. I sent Maisyn a text, and I’ll let you or the girls know what we figure out.”

“Thanks again. I’m in awe.”

We clear the table and make our way out of the restaurant, saying goodbye as we do. I’ve never seen Millie smile so much, but I’m sure she can say the same about me.

On our way home, she surprises me yet again. “I loved all of them.”

“I have to say, I’m shocked.”

Her head whips around. “Why’s that?”

“You don’t like anyone.”

She sticks her tongue out at me. “I guess that’s kind of true, but they were all so fierce. You know?”

“Yes, I do know.” I bite my nail. “It’s scary.”

“Only because we’re their age and still floundering,” she sneers.

I release a heavy sigh. “True, but this is our year.”

“Yes, it is.”

I hold my hand out, she takes it, and I squeeze it tightly. “To us; let’s make this year our bitch!”

“Hell yes! Smack her ass and make her call us daddy.” Millie chuckles.

“You have some serious issues.”

She turns into my complex, then right onto my street. As we round the building, I notice my hood’s up on my car. “What in the hell?”

“Let me get my tire iron before you jump out guns blazing,” Millie whispers.

“They can’t hear you.” I cut my eyes at her. “I’m calling the police.”

Just as I’m ready to hit dial, my dad’s head pops up from under the hood. “If you call the police on him, I’m running.”

“I’m not calling them on my dad, you loon.” I jump out as soon as Millie parks beside my car. “Daddy!”

“There’s my baby girl.” He holds me close as I hug him. “Mom’s upstairs. We brought you a few things.”

No matter how old you get, having your parents come to your aid always makes you feel better. “Please tell me she’s not doing my laundry.”

“I promised to not say a word. I’m changing your spark plugs.” He holds up his hand.
