“Why not?” Her brows pull tight.

“I have nothing to wear, and I need to get Mary a tune-up.”

She rolls her eyes. “Like that’s gonna help her, and you’ve needed a wardrobe since leaving high school.”

“Aren’t you supposed to be my best friend?”

“I know it hurts, but it hurts me more than it hurts you.” She pretends to wipe her eyes.

“I’ll think about it,” I tell her just to shut her up. “Oh, yeah. You do remember Reese invited us to lunch tomorrow?”

“I do. Does she have any friends?” She cocks her head.

“I’m sure she has friends, but I don’t know if they’re single lesbians.”

She purses her lips. “Tsk, tsk, I would know this for you. I’m the better friend.”

“That you are, Millie.” I pull her into a hug, holding her longer than I probably should.

She taps my arm. “Lola, sweetie, I can’t breathe.”

“Stay out of my sex life,” I whisper into her ear.

She latches on, humping my leg. “You know you want it.”

“Get off me!” I scream, pinching her side.

“Oh yeah, baby! I like it rough!” We fall to the floor in a fit of giggles.

I sit up, yanking her with me. “Come on, let’s go get you some clothes. I want you to stay the night with me.”

“Are you going to feed me? I need food and alcohol.” Millie’s mouth turns down at the corners.

My stomach growls with the sound a humpbacked whale makes. “Yeah, I need lots of food.”

“Good, I’m starving.” Millie stands, holding her hand out for me as I sit here in tears. “What is it, sweetie?”

“Nothing. Everything.” I dry my face with the end of my shirt. “I’m being silly. It’s just that, it’s the first meal in my home, and I don’t have to count the calories.”

She squats in front of me, taking my face in her hands. “Damn straight you don’t!”

“I’ll never be able to thank you enough for all you’ve done.” I hold her hand to my face. “I love you, Millie.”

“I love you, Lo.” She helps me up, and we walk out, arm in arm.

We run to her house, three streets over, and she packs a bag. We swing by grabbing some food and drinks to take back with us. Once at my place, we spend the rest of the night unpacking my things, which doesn’t take long.

Millie helps me make a list of everything I still need but don’t have the funds for yet. I’m in hopes I’ll soon get my big break and be able to get the things I need, for once, on my own.

“So, are we in for Sin City?” Millie eyes me.

I chew on my bottom lip, trying to buy time until I can think of a good excuse. There isn’t one. “Why the hell not! Let’s go sow some wild oats and get laid!” I tap her glass with mine as we toast to the future.
