I follow, filling her as she murmurs my name in the Scottish rain.

We lay here, sated and happy until the rain starts pelting us. “We should go.”

“Now you want to go.” She blinks rapidly.

“We’ll be fine.” I take her hand, helping her back on Clyde.

I take her through a short cut, hoping to get her back in one piece. We put Clyde up and make a break for the house, laughing as we run through every puddle between the stables and the house.

I open the door, pulling her in with me. “Come on, we’ll clean it up after we’re cleaned up.”

“We forgot the car too.”

“Tomorrow, I promise you it’s fine. We own that land; it’s a private road.”

“So that’s why you picked the meadow.” She bites her lip.

I blink. “We don’t own it.”

“Someone could’ve seen us!” Her mouth pops open.

“Gotcha!” I chuckle at the look on her face.

“You’re so mean to me.”

“What’s going on here?” Mother walks around the corner, smiling.

“He’s so mean to me.” Lola sticks her tongue out at me.

I lean in, whispering, “I have the perfect thing for that.”

“Oh my gracious.” Her face flames.

“Lennox, leave her alone.” Mother giggles. “I see you found him.”

“I did, thank you.”

I gaze at Lola, smiling like crazy. “Mother, this is Lolita Turner. Lola, my mother, Rebecca.” Lola reaches for her hand and Mother hugs her.

“I’m wet and dirty!” Lola gushes.

“I don’t mind. Anyone who can make my Lennox smile this way makes me happy.” Mother touches her eye with a tissue.

I take Lola’s hand. “I’m going to let her get cleaned up.”

“You better see yer athair first.” She kisses my cheek.

“I will.” I turn to the stairs. “Which room for Lola?”

Mother winks. “Yours, I suppose.”

“Okay.” My eyes widen, and I drag Lola up the stairs. “Wow.”

“What? About the room?” Lola quirks her brow.

I nod. “Shocking to say the least.” I point to their room. “This way, we’re on the other side.”

“Other side of what?”
