“I doubt that. He’s been working nonstop even to the point that I’m already sleeping when he gets home.”

“Look. Let’s talk in the car.” We walk to my car and climb in. As soon as the doors close, she turns to me and continues, “We grew up poor. My dad died before I could walk, forcing my mother in a very tight spot. We lost our home, starved many nights, and lived in poverty. Tony promised us the day he got his first job that we would never know the feeling of true hunger again. He’s probably just doing what he has to do to keep his company successful for the both of you and any little nugget you bring into this world. Look, talk to my brother. I’m positive that he’s madly in love with you and would do anything to make you happy.”

“Thanks, Maggie. I needed that. I’m drowning in self-doubt and fear. You won’t believe what happened this morning.”

“What?”

Tears well up in my eyes just thinking about it. “The lady next door walked in on her husband with his assistant. She packed up and left his ass, but I’d think I’d die if Tony…”

“Don’t go there. I know my brother. You two may have only been together for a minute but trust me when I say you’re it for him.”

“His assistant makes me feel otherwise. Is she pretty?”

“I’d say she is, but Tony’s never paid that bitch any mind. I don’t doubt she wants his money, so tell him that you don’t like her. He’ll always pick you over anyone else.”

“I can’t do that.”

“The hell you can’t. Stand up for yourself and your future.”

“Okay. Let’s get you home so I can wait for Tony to get off.” I drop her off ten minutes later and their mom waves to me. I wave back and power up my phone before pulling out of their driveway.

I’m about halfway home when my phone buzzes with messages from Tony. He sounds pissed which irritates me, so I call him to let him know I’m on my way. He’s got a lot of nerve to be angry with me.

CHAPTER FIVE

TONY

I’m about to break and call her again when my phone rings. I see her name take a calming breath before answering. “Hey, honey. I’m almost home. I just turned my phone back on.” What the fuck?

“Why was it off in the first place?” I seethe. Was she seeing someone else? I know I had to go back to work and things went to shit, but I doted on her, and we fucked almost every night. Well, not this week. I’ve been working late every night. It’s been a long, lonely week, but we were both virgins when we met so I can’t see why she’d seek someone else so soon. Fuck, ever. I’ll kill a bastard that dares to put a hand on my wife.

“I went to the movies with your sister,” she remarks as if my whole world hasn’t been upended.

“No cares, it seems,” I scoff, hating how absurd I sound to myself.

“I’m sorry? I thought you had to work late again.” The venom in her voice hasn’t gone unnoticed, and I feel like a prick. She’s right. I’ve left her completely alone every single day and then expect her to just be there when I show up early.

“I’m sorry my hours have been too long,” I sigh. I really am.

“Too long my ass,” she hisses with sarcasm and rage. Does she believe I’m having an affair? “Listen, Tony. I’m driving. I’ll be home soon.” She ends the call.

I stand there as anger forms in me. I want to spank her ass for talking while driving but mostly for thinking I’m having an affair. That’s why she wants to leave me? Where the hell would she get that idea?

I wait in the living room in my chair with a new drink in my hand, counting down the seconds until she returns. I can’t let her leave me. I’m going to have to do whatever I have to do to keep her. Even if it’s reminding her how much she loves crying out my name as she comes.

The clock on the wall pisses me off as the silence amplifies the “tick-tock.”

About a hundred ticks later the jingle of her keys gives me some relief and then the panic sets in. I brace myself for the words coming out of her mouth, but she comes in and doesn’t call out for me. I’m getting more and more pissed by the second. Finally, she makes it into the living room and stops to stare at me.

“So what movie did you two see?”

She stammers for a bit since the side table light is the only illumination in the room. “Emma.”

I rub the stubble on my chin, tilting my head as I stare at the only woman to ever captivate me. “Are you sure?”

She slams her hands on her sexy hips and yells. “What the fuck kind of question is that?”

“I’m just wondering why you did all you could not to call or message me before you went out in the first place.”
