Another damn knock on the door sends me over the edge. “What the fuck do you want?”
“Sir, there’s a commotion down here. They’ve arrested McDowell, and he’s accusing you of kidnapping Ms. Jones.”
“I’m not kidnapped. I’m being cockblocked,” Aurora screams out with a giggle. Opening the door is the investigator from the DA’s office, along with two officers.
“I told you,” Morris informs them.
“I know. Mr. Devlin informed me that Ms. Jones was his fiancé downstairs, but McDowell’s claims were shouted out to the crowd as he left. We have to do our due diligence, and you might need to do some damage control with your guests.”
“Why did you guys get the fucker in my house?”
“Sorry, it was a major sting operation put on by the mayor.”
“We’ll be down in a minute. I need a minute to freshen up.”
“No, Kitten. Let’s go now. We have a special guest coming soon, and I want you two to have some time together before the clock strikes midnight.”
She grins so widely that the cops don’t have a doubt that she hasn’t been forced at all. But it’s tough to smile right now because I’ve been cockblocked twice tonight.
CHAPTER NINE
RORY
As soon as my sister comes through the door, I throw my arms around her, hugging her tightly.
“Rory, I missed you so much. I thought I’d never see you again. They were planning to ship us off to the next handlers in the morning,” my little sister says, sobbing on my shoulder.
“I’m so sorry, Brynlee. I didn’t think they’d do that.”
“I’m just glad it’s over. It is over, right?” I can’t get enough hugging in.
“Yes. We’re safe here.”
“This place is massive, and so are the guys that picked me up. Especially the one they call Knight.” I look into her eyes and see a slight sparkle. Her rescuers may now hold a special place in her heart.
“Girls,” Maddox says, knocking on the door frame.
“It’s almost midnight. Come count it down with me.” He takes my hand, and I take Brynlee’s. He leads us out to the balcony where there’s a small patio set with two cushioned chairs and a small loveseat. The table is filled with food and soft drinks and a bottle of champagne and two flutes.
“Sorry, but no champagne for you, but I did get you some Sprite. You can toast with us,” he tells her. She’s not afraid of him. In fact, she pulls away from me and throws her arms around our hero.
“That’s wonderful. Thank you, Mr. Devlin.”
“Call me, Maddox. I’m going to be your brother-in-law one day soon.”
“Wow, that’s fast.”
“I’m a man who knows what he wants and gets it. Thankfully, your sister agrees.”
“I didn’t agree to marry you,” I tease.
He wags his brow, “Oh yes, you did. You promised me forever. Sorry, the unbreakable contract was signed, sealed, and delivered.” The countdown starts below us where the masses are gathered in the large courtyard to watch the fireworks.
“Five, four, three, two, one. Happy New Year!” everyone shouts.
“Happy new year, ladies.” He drags me into his arms and whispers in my ear, “My year ended with a bang. How about you?” His lips press gently under my ear, kissing me in that sweet spot, and then down my jaw, peppering little kisses until he reaches my lips. Like a starving animal, he devours my mouth.
Breathless, I pull back, and so my sister can’t hear, I reply, “I say we start the new year with another bang.”
