The whole time he didn’t say a word.
My lips trembled as I followed him to the car, but I shut it down once he reached for my bag to put it in the trunk. Still, not a word. Not even a word as we got in the car, and he started the engine.
The ten minute drive to the dorm was silent, and I wanted to get out of the suffocating air so I could breathe. When he pulled into the parking lot, he got out and grabbed my bag. I quickly unbuckled, and slammed the door behind me.
“What is your fucking problem?” I finally asked, glaring at him.
His jaw ticked, “That was a mistake. We shouldn’t have crossed that line. You’re about to be my stepsister. It was fucking disgusting.”
My breath caught, and the words died in my throat. My hand itched to slap him across the face, but I couldn’t. I couldn’t do anything. I was frozen, and a piece of my heart was breaking. I should’ve never agreed to the stupid deal in the first place.
I reached for the bag and took a step back. Unshed tears in my eyes, “I see.”
I took a breath, “See you around then.”
Turned out my decision to apply for a transfer wasn’t a stupid idea after all, because being around him and not being able to be with him would kill me.
I shook my head, and didn’t let him see me break. After he drove off and I got into my dorm, I let the tears fall.
Chapter Twenty-Seven
LEXI
My shoulders shook violently, as my knees were tucked tightly into my chest. My tears drenched the leggings and the door to the dorm flew open.
Hazel’s eyes widened when she saw me, and I couldn’t say anything in return. I sat there in front of her, letting everything out.
“Oh, honey. What happened?”
I shook my head, unable to tell her. How could I have been so naive? So stupid to let him play and use me like that?
The saddest part is that I actually thought he was changing...for the better. I thought he was giving in, and letting me see the real Kayden. Instead, he continued to show me that I would never matter to him.
I was always going to be an insignificant speck in his past, someone he would easily forget.
He was the one who wanted the deal. He was the one who wanted us to break up our parents, and now all of the sudden, he wanted to be my stepbrother? What the actual fuck just happened?
Hazel came to sit beside me, her back against the wall like mine. How could I tell her that I was so stupid? That I broke down and let out one of the biggest secrets of my life to him, for it to backfire in my face.
How do I tell her that my dream literally came true for it to fucking crumble in my face?
I let out a breath, “There was a blowup this weekend. I yelled at my Mom.”
“Whoa,” she whispered.
“There’s more. I couldn’t stand being there anymore, so Kayden took me back to the apartment his dad got for him and...”
She moved closer as if she was waiting on baited breath, “What?”
A sigh escaped my lips, “We had sex.”
“Holy mother...That’s amazing! Wait...why are you crying though? Isn’t that something to celebrate?”
You would think.
“When I woke up after the fact, he was dressed and told me to get my things. When we got back here, he told me it was a mistake and disgusting since we were step-siblings.”
“What the actual fuck? What the hell is wrong with him?”
