I don’t think I could stand it right now if I couldn’t touch him.
He takes a deep breath, laced with tension and my heart hurts for this man I love so fiercely.
And when he finally speaks?
His voice sounds empty.
Dark.
Cold.
Incredibly sad.
Like he's somewhere far away.
“When I first got out of the service, I became a mercenary.”
I blink.
What?
“I worked for the highest bidder. Figured it was the easiest way to make money using what I'd learned in the military.”
His jaw tightens.
“My crew warned me about this particular outfit. Said they weren't good people.”
He laughs.
But there's no humor in it.
“Guess I should've listened.”
My heart starts pounding.
“Less—”
“First assignment was in Africa.”
His eyes close.
“We were supposed to secure government buildings and recover documents after a coup attempt. That was the mission.”
He swallows hard.
“But my team?”
His voice breaks.
“They weren't the good guys, Rusty.”
Something inside me goes cold.
“They planned to level a school and a hospital to get what they wanted.”
“Oh my God.”
“It was supposed to be empty.”
