“So, do you know any good spots for Max here in Fox Haven?” I asked.

Cal leaned forward, placing his elbows on the table. He seemed to be deep in thought.

I liked that about him. He didn’t say the first thing that came to his mind and seemed to choose his words carefully.

“The woods near Redtree Lake seem good. Do you know it?” he asked slowly.

“I think I’ve heard of it, but no, I’ve never been. Is it nice?” I asked.

“It is. I should know, I live there,” he said.

I leaned back in my chair. Well, well. This was interesting. Maybe I wasn’t overthinking things earlier.

Cal’s look told me he seemed to be interested in something more than just friendship.

I also didn’t fail to notice the hunger in his eyes when my robe accidentally fell slightly open, revealing a glimpse of my chest.

I stretched out my arms over my head and my robe opened up even more. Cal shifted in his seat, his eyes turning a darker shade of blue.

For a split second, I debated pulling it close, but I didn’t. I loved the effect I was having on him.

“We should set something up then,” I said.

“Definitely,” Cal agreed.

Cal’s gaze lingered on me. He had that same look he had on last night, like he was expecting me to say something more.

I made a mental note to ask him about it.

“Hey, Nate! The plumbing’s all good. You guys can bring the stuff into the house now.” Rory yells from the backdoor, breaking the heavy tension in the air.

My shoulders slumped. Time to finally face the music. I shouldn’t have put this off for so long. At least I didn’t have to do it alone.

I had Cal by my side.

Chapter 7

Cal

Once Nate and I finished devouring breakfast, he excused himself to take a shower, leaving me alone in the yard. I glanced at Max, who hissed at me before following his dad.

I ran a hand through my hair, a nervous habit of mine. When I arrived on Rory's porch, I wasn't sure what to expect.

Nate also seemed momentarily surprised by my presence, but he quickly regained his composure.

We enjoyed a pleasant breakfast and engaged in an interesting conversation. Most of our topics were mundane, but I didn't mind.

The sound of Nate's voice was comforting, making me realize that I had never felt this at ease with anyone else.

Of course, Nate's bathrobe didn't hurt either. I could tell he was wearing nothing but boxers underneath, which ignited my imagination more than once.

I fantasized about carrying him to his bedroom and removing that worn-out bathrobe.

"Get your mind out of the gutter," I reminded myself.

I was here to help Nate move, nothing else.

With no plans for the day, the prospect of spending more time with him sounded divine. It was a great opportunity to get to know Nate better.
