When he died, I stopped waiting for miracles, I learned to defend myself.

And that's exactly what I'm going to do now.

I get dressed in oversized sweatpants and an oversized hoodie. I put on my sneakers and leave my loft.

I mute my comm and head for the only place I know that might lead me to what I want.

The Lower Layers.

I'm going to make him pay for breaking into my home and making sure I never sleep peacefully again.

Even if I have no fucking idea where to find him or how I'm supposed to get my revenge.

I'll figure it out. Because one way or another...

I will get what I want.

CHAPTER 18

Riven

Play With Fire - Sam Tinnesz feat. Yacht Money

Colossal industrial elevators connect the polished Upper Layers to the Lower Layers.

I took one when I escaped him the night of the race, roughly a week ago.

Glass and marble give way to exposed steel, weathered concrete, and flickering lights.

Neon glows over crowded streets as steam rises from vents, the air thick with the smell of oil, exhaust, and street food.

The steady hum of engines and machinery replaces the quiet order of the Upper Layers.

I don't know where I am or where I'm supposed to go.

Everything looks the way I remember it.

But now that I'm completely alone, I'm starting to think this might be the worst idea I've ever had or at least one of them.

Me and my stubborn ass--I never seem capable of thinking more than two steps ahead before I end up neck-deep in trouble.

I don't belong here.

Despite my outfit, people keep looking at me.

The strange girl with mismatched eyes and oversized clothes that somehow look far too normal compared to all the cyber-styled outfits around me.

Every glance makes me more aware of it, I stick out like a sore thumb.

I wander the streets, trying to find anything connected to Evren.

But I might as well be looking for a needle in a haystack.

No matter how notorious that fucker is, I still can't find him.

Just more crowded streets, more unfamiliar faces and the growing realization that I came down here with absolutely no plan.

I walk for hours.
