A sad smile touched his face.
“More than I deserved.”
I reached for his hand.
Nathan looked down at our joined fingers.
“I’m sorry, I was angry.”
“You had every right to be.”
“You were protecting Grandpa.”
“And keeping his secrets.”
“Sometimes they were the same thing.”
“Sometimes,” he said. “Not always.”
The honesty in his voice reminded me of Grandpa.
Maybe that was why Grandpa trusted him.
Nathan never pretended his choices were perfect.
He simply lived with the weight of them.
Ward crouched near the bow.
“Tunnel entrance in two minutes.”
Nathan released my hand and checked his weapon.
The gentle man disappeared again.
“I go first.”
Ward shook his head.
“My team goes first.”
“I know the tunnel.”
“And I know how to clear confined spaces.”
Nathan looked ready to argue.
Ben settled it.
“Ward first. Nathan second. I’ll bring Storm.”
Ward’s jaw tightened.
“She stays between us at all times.”
“Yes, Mother,” Ben said.
Ward stared at him.
