Thomas slowly shook his head.

"Because James made me promise."

Ward glanced toward the journals.

"My grandfather asked you not to?" I asked.

Thomas nodded.

"No."

"He begged me."

The room fell silent again.

Finally, Ivy spoke.

"Thomas..."

"How can a name be that dangerous?"

Thomas closed his eyes.

"When I was a boy..."

"...my father taught me something."

He looked toward the open water beyond the dock.

"He said there are storms you sail through..."

"...and storms you never go looking for."

His eyes found mine.

"That man..."

"...is the second kind."

Ben folded his arms.

"With all due respect..."

"...he's just a man."

Thomas's expression changed.

"No."

His answer came instantly.

"That's what James believed."

"And he spent the rest of his life proving himself wrong."

I looked down at the turned-over photograph.
