Storm whispered before she realized she'd spoken.
"You've been watching us?"
Nathan nodded.
"For years."
Questions crashed through my mind faster than waves against the hull.
"If that's true..."
"Why didn't you ever come to us?"
The smile disappeared from Nathan's face.
"Because James believed the safest family..."
"...was one that didn't know it was being protected."
Ward's expression changed ever so slightly.
That answer made sense.
Too much sense.
Nathan looked toward the horizon behind us.
His eyes hardened.
"But that changed three days ago."
Storm felt the knot return to her stomach.
"What happened?"
"They found you."
My pulse quickened.
"Who?"
Nathan hesitated.
Long enough for me to know he hated the answer.
"The same people who killed your father."
The words hit me like a rogue wave.
I couldn't breathe.
My father.
Killed.
Not lost.
Not an accident.
