“They aren’t here to clean up, Maren.” Trevor’s voice is deep and firm as he squares his shoulders. “They’re here to pack.”
Again, the differences in our upbringings and lifestyles are abundantly clear.
“I can’t just move because someone broke in, Trevor. My lease on this place isn’t up for six more months, and I don’t have anywhere else lined up. I—”
“I’ll pay off your lease.” He points toward the back bedroom, his attention on his mother. “That’s Zara’s room. Start there.”
This is ridiculous. He’s completely overreacting. And while I sort of appreciate his willingness to pay to get me somewhere else, it won’t actually solve my problem. “It doesn’t matter if I move. It’s only a matter of time before she finds me and sends someone to see what they can get again.”
“I’m counting on that.” Trevor gets Tobias’s attention as his brother walks in. “They tipped the fridge over. See if you can get it upright and salvage anything inside.”
I don’t want to admit how attractive Trevor’s take-charge personality is right now. Having someone tackle this whole mess for me is not the worst thing that’s ever happened. But his effort is going to be wasted.
“I know you’re trying to help, but there’s no point in me trying to move.” I step in front of him as he attempts to go into my bedroom. “It’s really nice of your family to do this, but it’s fine. Really.”
Trevor’s eyes narrow on me, and the determination there morphs into something else. Something a little scary.
In a good way, if that’s even possible.
He advances on me, and I automatically take a step back. Probably a natural sense of self-preservation since he looks like he’s about to bulldoze whatever’s in front of him. I’m not scared of Trevor—in any capacity—but there are moments his intensity can be a little much.
And I don’t want to have to throw something heavy at him in front of his mother. I can’t imagine that would go over super well.
Trevor keeps coming, and I keep stepping back, because I’m not sure what else to do in this moment. If I can’t chuck a vase at his head or call him a prick—again not something I want to do in front of his mother—my options feel kind of limited.
As soon as he’s cleared my bedroom door, he slams it closed behind him, blocking us in as he continues tracking me across the floor. It’s not until my back hits the wall that he stops, one hand flattening against the drywall beside my head as he invades my space, leaning down until we’re practically nose to nose. What he says next makes me wish I had thrown something at him after all.
“You and your sister are moving in with me.”
“Absolutely not.” My mouth hangs open for a second, because what the fuck? “We are not moving in with you.”
“I wasn’t asking.” Trevor’s other hand comes up to cage me in. “You aren’t safe here. There’s no way I can keep sleeping outside. And even if you let me in, I have to go to work.” He slowly shakes his head. “There’s no fucking way I’m letting you two sleep here again. With or without me.”
I scoff. “You can’t just make decisions about my life.”
“You’d be surprised what I can do.” Trevor plants a kiss right on my lips before straightening away. “Now pack up your vibrators. Because if one of my brothers sees them, I’ll have to stab his eyeballs out.”
Trevor goes straight for my bedside table, grabbing the drawer and pulling it out.
I cross both arms over my chest, kind of interested to see his reaction to what he finds in there. I’m not the freakiest of freakies, but I have a pretty well-stocked lineup.
Trevor’s brows pinch, and I smirk, wondering if it’s the nipple clamps or the flower-shaped pulsing apparatus that has him confused.
Trevor turns to me, his eyes dragging down my body. “I didn’t expect you to be a hands-on kind of woman.”
“What?” I stride over to figure out which item in that drawer would make him say that. My lip curls the second I reach his side. “You’ve got to be kidding me.”
The drawer is empty.
“So fucking gross.” I nearly retch thinking about the fate that has befallen my beloved little sidekicks. “What in the hell is wrong with people?”
Trevor scrubs one hand over his face, taking a deep breath before blowing it back out. “Is this a normal part of the process?”
“If you’re asking whether or not they normally steal my sexual aids, the answer is no.” I slam the drawer. “This is a new development.”
I turn, marching to my bedroom door and swinging it open, determined to find out what other weird items the assholes took.
Doug from down the street is talking to Tucker and looks relieved when he sees me, arms stretching wide as he comes my way. “I saw the police cars and came to make sure you were okay.”
