I could go to him. Demand he fuck me through my mattress. And he would.

As long as I demanded enthusiastically.

Well, fuck him. Metaphorically.

I flop down in my bed, pulling the covers up to my chin as I stare at the ceiling.

Wishing like hell I knew how to be just a little less difficult. Because then I’d be fucking Trevor.

Literally.

Trevor

Iwas planning to get up early so I could go home to get showered and changed before coming back with breakfast and coffee. Assumed that wouldn’t be a difficult feat considering I was sleeping on a sofa. Instead, I must have crashed hard, because now I’m dragging my eyelids open well after eight.

To discover I’m not the first one up.

Zara dangles a circle of colorful, braided thread over my face, the beads tied at one end brushing against my nose. “I made you a bracelet.”

Reaching up, I carefully take the item. “Thanks.”

Zara holds her wrist about two inches from my eyeballs, bringing yet another set of beads to tickle my nose. “I have one too. It means we’re best friends.”

“Yeah?” I look over her handiwork. “You did a really good job on these.”

“Thanks.” Zara points at the bracelet in my hand. “Now put it on.”

I grin as I do her bidding. Maren and Zara seemed completely different at first—one having a bright, shining personality and the other a no-nonsense ball of oppositional defiance—but the longer I’m around the five-year-old, the more obvious their genetic connection becomes.

Working carefully, I gently tie the bracelet into place. “You don’t mind telling people what to do, do you?”

Zara watches me intently. “No.”

“Good. Maybe I’ll hire you someday.” I manage to get the gift secured, then hold it up for inspection. “How’s it look?”

“Great.” Zara lifts her own wrist. “Now everyone at the petting zoo will know we’re friends.”

“That they will.” I work my way upright, peering past her. “Is your sister still asleep?”

“Maren likes to sleep in.” Zara’s eyes narrow as she scans my position. “Why are you sleeping on our couch?”

I rock my head from side to side, trying to work out the tension there. “Because it’s more comfortable than my car.”

“Why don’t you sleep at your house?” Zara immediately fires back at me.

“That is a great question.” And I would love to answer it. I just can’t.

Because I don’t fucking know why I don’t just sleep at my house.

I tried, but ended up getting antsy. Even watching the trailer from all angles though the app on my phone, I couldn’t relax enough to drift off. Because what could I do if I did see someone on one of the cameras? It takes me almost a half hour to get here from my place. By that time, anything could happen.

Maren will probably have murdered the intruder and loaded him into her van. I don’t even know how much Pierce will charge me to clean that sort of a mess up.

So it just seems easier to stick close. I’m not super comfortable sleeping in my car, but at least I’m sleeping.

“You want some breakfast?” I move Zara’s attention into safer territory. An area I know it will stay, because my new BFF loves to eat.
