She nodded. “I need to do what’s right for me. This is what’s right: being here with you, working with Molly and helping her.”
He kissed her. “Good for you.”
She agreed with a decisive nod. “Let’s talk about something different—anything else. Like, did you have a chance to speak with Captain Bob?”
He smiled. “I did.”
She hooked her fingers in his front pockets. “Tell me about it after you tell me about your day. How was island crime fighting today?”
His grin returned. “Pretty chill. We had a couple more accidents after you left. Otherwise things were quiet, but there’s the potential for a busy night.”
She wrinkled her nose, preferring when Nate got to spend his nights sleeping next to her. “We’ll have to keep the thermos ready for coffee.”
“I appreciate it.” He kissed her. “Do you want to talk about the locket while we cook?”
Her eyes popped wide as she gasped. “I forgot about the fish. Nate, I’m so sorry.”
He shrugged. “It’s no big deal. We’ll just scrounge through the cupboards. Scrambled eggs are never a bad idea.”
“After I found the locket, my mind…”
“Callie, it’s fine.” He slid his fingers through her hair. “That would have thrown me for a loop too.”
She nodded. “So, what did Captain Bob say?”
“That he found the locket somewhere in Brewster’s Forest and we shifted his time frame to somewhere between the last ten or fifteen years.”
She struggled with disappointment, having hoped for more. “Oh.”
“I know it’s not much to work with. To be honest, I don’t know what the end game is in this situation. We’ve got a locket you saw in your dream, then at the antiques store, which was found in the woods by our ferry captain approximately a decade to fifteen years ago.”
“It’s weird.”
He nodded. “Yeah, it is.”
“It doesn’t make any sense.”
“I don’t have any explanations. You’re not psychic, are you?” He closed his eyes. “Quick. What am I thinking?”
Grinning, she gave him a playful poke in the belly. “If I had to guess, I’d say that whatever you’re thinking about has something to do with your stomach or sex.”
“Holy shit,” he said as he opened his eyes and they grew wide. “You are psychic.”
She laughed before she sobered with her reoccurring thought. “What if—I keep—” She shook her head.
“What?”
“I keep spooking myself. What if Bess is wrong and the locket is an antique? What if I’m so drawn to the island and its history because I was reincarnated or something?”
He raised his brow. “Uh…”
She laughed again. “I know. It’s silly but at least it’s an explanation.”
“Technically, yes…”
She chuckled as he smiled. “Don’t tease me for grasping at straws.”
He cupped her cheeks and nuzzled her nose. “I kind of like teasing you. You’re sexy when you’re grasping at straws—pretty much all the time you’re sexy.”
