A thought he’d had more than a few times. “But that’s the thing. I talked to Bob hours before Mac and Denny found him. He wasn’t in crisis. Nothing about his demeanor seemed distressed in any way.”

“My findings are an opinion. If new evidence comes to light or lab results come back different from what I suspect, the cause of death can be changed. But Nathan, I just don’t see how it could be any other way.”

Right now, he didn’t either. “I can’t stop looking. I owe Bob that.”

Matthew stood. “This is talk for another time. Right now, I want you to get into bed and get some sleep. We’re going to get counseling set up—an appointment for next Tuesday morning if I can make it happen. I know that’s a few days away, but I’ll do what I can to bridge the gap.” Matthew moved to where Nate sat, resting his hand on Nate’s shoulder. “She’s going to do just fine, Nathan. I’m going to make sure of it.”

“Thank you.”

“You’re welcome.” Matthew walked over to Nate’s side of the bed and pulled the covers back farther. “In you go. Doctor’s orders.”

Nate smiled, gave Winston a solid pat, and stood, crawling in.

“I’ll lock up on the way out.”

He rested his head on the pillow. “I appreciate everything. I know Callie does too.”

“That’s what I’m here for. We do what we can for family. I’ll come by and check on you both before I open the clinic.”

“Thanks.”

“Call if you need anything,” Matthew said as he stepped into the hallway.

“I will.” Nate snuggled up close to Callie as the front door shut downstairs and Matthew’s car started moments later. There was a lot going on—too many terrible things. He held Callie tighter as the weight of it all settled heavier on his shoulders. Bob’s case needed attention, and Samantha Fletcher’s disappearance would most likely be formally classified as a homicide investigation, but none of that mattered more than making sure Callie was going to be okay. Nate breathed in the scent of her shampoo and closed his eyes, willing the sedative to keep the nightmares at bay and give Callie a little peace for the night.
