“It is, but—”
“Let’s do it. The Big Apple. Just the two of us. Our first getaway. You can show me around and take me to your favorite places.”
She smiled. “What about work?”
Currently, he didn’t care about his job—just the fact that the troubled light was leaving her eyes. “What about it? I never take time off. Ever. Mac’s my undersheriff. He can cover me. The island isn’t going to fall apart in forty-eight hours.”
She brushed the hair back from his forehead. “Are you sure about this?”
“Take me to New York,” he whispered.
She grinned. “If that’s what you want.”
“It is.” He wiggled his brows. “I want it for us—to go have some fun.”
She chuckled with a decisive nod. “All right. You officially have your very own Manhattan tour guide.”
“Perfect.” He lifted his head off the pillow, snagging her bottom lip between his teeth. “You know what else I want?”
Her left eyebrow winged up. “Uh, from what I can feel against my thigh, I’m willing to take a pretty good guess.”
He rolled, laying her on her back. “I think you might have a career in detective work.”
She laughed as she locked her arms around his neck.
He pushed himself forward, watching her smile dissolve into a gasp as he entered her silky warmth. “You always feel so good.”
She wrapped her legs around his waist, pushing him deeper. “I was thinking the same thing.”
“How do you want this to go? Fast or slow?”
She smiled. “Surprise me.”
He moved slowly, keeping a lazy pace, arrowing deeper to slide against her just right.
She whimpered, rocking her hips to his rhythm. “Nate.”
The humor of the last few moments was gone—the passion heating up as her breathing changed to short shuddering exhales. He grabbed her hands, pushing them over her head and clasping her fingers with his, waiting for her to let go—to forget anything and everything except him and the pleasure they brought each other.
She trembled, gripping his hands and holding his gaze, before her eyes went blind and she tipped her head back, calling out.
He kissed her jaw, then captured her mouth, swallowing the last of her cries as he fell over the edge. Nuzzling her neck, he breathed in the scent of her shampoo, waiting for his heart rate to steady out. “Man, that never gets old.”
She chuckled. “It’s unfortunate we’re going to have to get up and pack.”
He lifted his head as he glanced at the bedside clock, then looked down at her. “We could stay here and set the alarm a half hour earlier.”
“Make it an hour and you’ve got a deal.”
“Deal.” He reversed their positions again, eager to hold Callie in their little cocoon until they were ready to start all over again. As far as he was concerned, they could worry about tomorrow when it got here.

Callie heard an owl hoot twice before her eyes flew open in the dark. She sat up in a rush, clutching at the covers as a strong gust of wind battered against the windows. “Oh, God, a dream. I had another dream.”
“What?” Nate sat up next to her on his side of the bed. “You had a dream?”
“Yes.”
