Exposed, he thought.

The word should have meant unsafe.

Tonight it did not.

That was the part that kept him awake.

Chapter 7: First Breach

The first time the line worked in front of another team, Luca did not score.

That was how he knew it mattered.

All day Rowan had behaved as if room 614 contained nothing more intimate than two beds and an unreliable thermostat.

At breakfast he asked whether Luca had eaten enough protein. On the bus he reviewed power-play entries with Finn between them. During warmup he corrected Luca's route with the same two-word precision he used for everyone else.

No mention of 1:17. No hotel pillow. No fingers against Luca's ankle.

Luca had told Rowan his secrets were safe. Apparently Rowan had decided that meant they did not exist.

The distance should have restored something. Instead, it made Luca notice every private detail hidden beneath the public version: the extra second Rowan took after bending to lace his right skate, the way he stretched his hip near the bench when coaches looked elsewhere, the glance he gave Luca after a clean warmup rep and withheld the nod.

Luca did not offer help.

Care given once did not make him Rowan's keeper. Knowing did not grant ownership.

But when the puck dropped, every read between them carried the memory of being trusted with something Rowan had not intended to share.

The morning had given Luca several chances to make the night into a joke.

At breakfast Rowan arrived before him and had already claimed a table with Finn and Nolan. The pillow from the desk was invisible. So was the sharp line Rowan had used to defend himself, and the two-finger touch that had contradicted it.

Luca sat beside Finn rather than across from Rowan.

"Protein," Rowan said after one glance at Luca's plate.

"Good morning to you too."

"You have toast and fruit."

"Fruit contains emotional protein."

Finn pushed the basket of eggs toward him. "Please eat before this becomes a leadership summit."

Luca added eggs. Rowan returned to the game sheet.

No one at the table heard anything but a captain monitoring a rookie. Luca heard that Rowan had noticed his plate before saying good morning.

At Port Ellis Ice Hall, the Breakers scored first on a rebound Gabriel could not see through traffic. Northstar's top line spent its opening shifts discovering that their new verbal trigger sounded different beneath an opposing crowd. Luca called the trigger once too late and Finn sent the puck into space he had already left. On the bench Rowan did not criticize the idea.

"Earlier," he said.

The next time Luca saw the defenseman's feet rotate, he called before his own route changed. The pass did not come. Rowan stayed under it, recovered the loose puck, and they kept possession.

Not a highlight. Not a goal. A mistake prevented from becoming another one.

By the first intermission Northstar still trailed 1-0, but the line had stopped playing as three talented men negotiating separate plans.
