Vale played the successful entry from the end of practice. Finn held the left. Rowan delayed through the middle. Luca waited on the right until the defense committed.
We make them choose.
On screen, Rowan opened his shoulders toward Finn. Mateo shifted. Luca entered the seam before the pass had fully left Rowan's blade.
Vale slowed the clip.
"Look at eighty-eight."
Rowan already was.
Luca's head turned once toward the middle. His weight stayed over the outside edge. His hands separated before the lane appeared. He had read Rowan's deception from the position of his shoulders, perhaps from the angle of the blade.
Not guessed. Read.
Vale ran it again.
Beside Rowan, Finn leaned forward. "That's quick."
Rowan did not need the replay. He knew the number of strides Luca had taken after the blue line. He knew where the stick had opened. He knew the release had gone above Gabriel's pad rather than across the body because the goalie had moved early.
He had not written any of it down.
"Bennett," Vale said. "Why did you hold?"
Luca's answer came without humor. "His shoulder stayed left. Mateo believed it."
"And you?"
"I waited."
Vale nodded toward Rowan. "That is the point. Improvisation works when the line shares enough language to recognize it."
The screen went dark for a moment as he changed clips. Rowan's reflection appeared in the black glass. Luca's sat two seats away, turned slightly toward him.
Rowan looked down at his notebook.
The page contained three notes.
None about the goal.
When the lights came up, Vale caught Rowan before he reached the aisle.
"You dislike the trigger," he said.
"I dislike relying on a call we have not tested."
"That is why we test it."
Rowan closed his notebook. Around them, chairs folded upward and players moved into the hall. Luca stopped at the door when Finn said something, then continued without looking back.
Vale followed Rowan's attention. "He does not need you to approve every risk. He needs you to know which ones the other four can survive."
"I know."
"Knowing quickly and liking slowly is still adaptation."
Rowan met the coach's gaze. Vale did not smile. He had been hired because he could challenge veteran authority without turning the challenge into theater.
