The abilities of these Guardians are connected to their physical appearances, and through the bond, the human can harness power.
A human cannot choose a Guardian. It is upon the Guardian to perceive the destiny and intertwining threads of a human’s soul. They decide whether it aligns with their own goals—this connection can only be severed by death.
Each Guardian was granted an animal form as a symbol of their power.
The bond between a Guardian and a human is sacred, as revered as the aeshana.
As much as I tried, I couldn’t find out anything about the term aeshana. After this passage, the rest of the chapter was about the Guardians who had bonded with Humans before Edoris came to power and the powers they could bestow on their wielders.
Tarak O’hkor & Maka
Tarak O’hkor was a known warrior from southern Kalor who was chosen by Maka—a great tarantula Guardian with long, dark green legs.
Together, they could create a smoky cloud of venom, paralyzing their victims and flooding their minds with hallucinations, leaving them to die at the hands of their own terror.
They fought and fell during the Blood War, during the first ascension of chaos.
My whole body shivered at the thought.
It gave me the creeps. I decided to put the book down and blow out the candle’s flame.
Fortunately, I didn’t think of Zaid as I drifted off into the darkness. Or the tarantula, for that matter. The green eyes transformed into shimmering shards that lit up my dreams.
“I WANT TO train,” Lyra said when she saw me in my black leather suit, which Nefeli left for me. I chuckled, looking at her as I buckled the belt around my pants.
“I don’t think it’s up to me,” I said.
“Well, I’m more persuasive than you.” She arched a brow, looking for another suit. She chose a brown one, and I inquired, “So, what’s your plan?”
She pulled her legs into the pants, then cuffed them, shortening their length. ”I’m just going to stay here, looking at you guys, until the muscular guy agrees. Then, if he doesn’t agree to train me, I’m going to ask him a lot of questions.”
She zipped up the top of her suit, and the zipper stopped right at her bust.
“You know we’re not the same size. You can cheat with the pants, but unfortunately, your breasts are bigger than mine and can’t fit in my leathers,” I said.
She grinned maliciously. “At last, I will finally have some leverage!”
I burst into laughter, the sensation tickling my belly. “You’re too wild for this world, you know.”
We left the room. Climbing down the stairs, we walked to reach the hallway, our boots creaking with our weight against the floor.
Four broad figures were waiting for us, all clothed in leather. Aware of his gaze on me, I glanced at the commander, who took in my attire—the black leather I wore. His nostrils flared at the sight. I squirmed in place, trying my best not to look at him, not to recall the events of last night. His hand on my face, his lips—
I rolled my shoulders and focused on the others—Dax and my brothers—who were chatting together. Arthur glanced at me, his brown eyes shimmering with relief. I needed some time alone with him.
Once we reached the door, Dax remarked as he glanced down at Lyra’s breasts, “Need another leather suit?”
Arthur blushed, glancing at the ceiling. Lyra’s smile widened as she said in her silky voice, “No, it’s fine, unless it’s a distraction for any of you.”
I tried to suppress my chuckle, biting the inside of my cheek.
Dorian smirked at Arthur’s reaction, his cheeks flush with embarrassment. He avoided eye contact with Lyra. They were so obvious it was ridiculous.
“Not exactly,” Dax replied with a broad smile. “It’s more of an incentive to train harder.”
Zaid chuckled, a sound that reverberated through my bones and coursed through my veins. He patted Dax’s shoulder. “Keep it in your pants, brother,” Zaid said, with a smirk on his lips, his green eyes lit up with mischief. “Shall we?”
We all meandered through the garden, past the statues and withering flowers. A building stood out in front of us, and we passed through the wooden door and entered a large empty room, already filled with people waiting with Nefeli.
