I search his face trying to get a read on this man. He's definitely a gentleman, but… the words flow out of me.

"You've spent time to come here and help me with this, I have to pay you for that time."

"I don't need the money."

"What are you my guardian angel or something?"

"Something. Tell me, what would you fix first?"

"You mean here in the house?"

He nods and takes another sip of tea.

"The kitchen. I like to cook and want to make a food vlog, but I need a better backdrop for my videos."

"Is that what you do for a living?"

"No, right now I'm working as a virtual assistant."

"Let me help you. I can start on the kitchen tomorrow afternoon."

"I can't let you do that, Mitchell."

"At least let me work on the kitchen. If you don't like it, we don't have to do the rest. Think of it as a trial run."

A part of me thinks it's crazy that this man wants to help me, but a bigger part wants to spend more time with this rugged, silver fox that looks good enough to eat. I find myself nodding at his request, and he gives me that bright smile again.

"Then it's settled. I'll start tomorrow."

With that, he picks up his toolbox and walks out of my house, leaving me flustered and a little bit turned on.

Chapter 4

Mitchell

Sarah is a complete surprise to me. She's young. So young. But has had to deal with a lot in her young life. Once the crisis was averted, she calmed down and was able to have a normal conversation with me. I've never felt more at ease with someone than during that conversation.

It's how I decided, without any urging from her, that I was going to help her restore her home. I didn't say that to her, but inside I made up my mind. I don't know if she was overwhelmed with everything that had happened, but she agreed to it, and I'm not letting her back down.

Today I'm taking her shopping for some tile and maybe even granite for her counter. I'm not certain how I will convince her that I will be paying for everything, but that's a worry for another time.

I park once again in her driveway and ask myself why I've been so moved by this tiny person that has come into my life so randomly. And she is tiny, around five feet five inches to my six four. I knock on the door and I hear a shout to come in.

"I'm in the kitchen!"

I place my toolbox on a table and go find out what she's doing that's making so much noise.

"Oh my God."

I rush to where she's standing on a ladder and manage to catch her before she falls to the ground. The dishes she's holding are not as lucky as she is and go tumbling down the floor and crash into a million pieces.

"Oh no, my grandmother's china."

"What do you think you were doing?"

"I wanted to clear the cupboards before you came in so we could start with the repairs around the kitchen."

"If I hadn't just come in you could have hurt yourself."
