The kiss itself is disarming, and before I know it, I'm grabbing his shirt with my fists, trying to get him closer to me. After the longest while, as my loins are starting to ignite, he pulls back. His thumb strokes my cheek and he bops my nose with his finger.
"You're an angel, did you know that?"
"Kiss me again, Mitchell."
He now steps back and looks like he wants to run away.
"This can never happen again. I need to go, Sarah."
And with that, he leaves me completely befuddled, not knowing what the hell happened to scare him away.
Chapter 6
Mitchell
Did I make a mistake by pulling away from Sarah yesterday? I'm on my way over to her house, and there's an inner battle inside of me. The possibility of having her all to myself is so enticing, but I don't know if I'm what's good for her right now.
She's still grieving her grandmother and learning how to live life without her. I grab the door handle and it opens under my hand. Sarah is sitting down working on her computer on the living room table. I walk to the kitchen and give her a nod and a grunt.
It's about as much as I'm capable of saying right now. I've never felt like this before in my life. This sweet angel is making my thoughts go haywire. Do I have something to offer besides money and a lifetime of experience? I start doing demo work on the kitchen and watch her take her computer and move upstairs.
She needs to be able to do her work without interruptions, and here I am throwing a jackhammer at her walls. When I get to the cabinets, I realize we'll have to have them remade because these have termites. That also means that I have to cure the area so the termites don't spread to the new units.
After working for a while, Sarah comes down. It's around five o'clock, the time she told me she could help me with the work. I wipe the sweat off my forehead and look at her. She looks pissed and she has a reason to be that way. She picks up the jackhammer I've been using and starts hammering the walls and whatever is left in the kitchen to demolish.
Every hit of the hammer is felt by me on my body. It's as if she's hitting me instead of the walls. When she finally stops, she's breathing hard and her features show some improvement. In this state I could probably talk to her. If I dare to.
"Sarah."
"I don't want to talk to you."
"Sarah."
"You don't get to give me the best kiss I've ever had and then say it can never happen again. I won't have it."
"You have to understand. I'm too old for you."
"Why does this have to be a unilateral decision? Why don't I get a say in what I want for my life?"
I look at her, and she's determined and ready to fight me about this. Is it wrong that it makes me want to kiss her again? I just can't with this woman.
"I'm sorry, I panicked. You have no idea how bad I've got it for you, little one."
"I'm not little. I've got curves."
"Curves to die for, that's for sure. Talk to me."
"It seemed to me that you were the one doing all the talking and the one making decisions."
"I didn't mean to shut you out. It was just easier to run away."
"Do you think we won't fit because of our age difference?"
"I think this feels too good to be true. Like my wildest dream has come to life, and I just have to reach out and grab it. I feel like life's tricking me."
She walks closer to where I am and sets the sledgehammer down. She's now so close that I can scent the sweat on her body because of the hard labor. Underneath there are other sweet smelling scents like strawberries.
"Life put us together for a reason, Mitchell. You answered my call for help. What does that tell you?"
