A whimper claws its way out of my throat when he leisurely rolls his hips. I can feel everything. Every ridge. Every throb. Every slow, torturous drag of him inside me, and it’s too much to take without shattering.

“Please,” I beg again, the word breaking with my ragged breaths.

Rhett’s grip tightens on my hip. His breath shudders against my skin. He’s barely holding on either—his cock pulses heavier inside me, his fingers tremble where they dig into my flesh.

Then he snaps.

Pulling out to the tip, Rhett slams back in, bottoming out again and again as he commands, “Now. Come for me, Avery. I want to feel your pussy milk my cock.”

The sound of him thrusting, our skin slapping together as I clench around him, echoes around us with our moans and groans that drown out our ragged breaths.

“Come, baby!” Rhett grunts with one last thrust that pushes all the air from my lungs.

Everything fades as my orgasm rips through me. Blinding. Burning. Breathtaking. There’s no relent as he thickens deep inside me, filling me with his hot cum to a slew of unintelligible curses muffled by my thundering heart.

“God, you are so damn fucking beautiful when you come for me.”

I open my eyes at his words, my spotty vision finding his pleasure-hazed stare. Grinding into me, he strokes over my sensitive flesh, scissoring my fingers open with his and rubbing our dripping cum around my entrance and the tops of my thighs before bringing my hand up. He laces it with his as he sucks my three glistening fingers into his mouth without a single blink.

Holy. Fucking. Shit.

Oh Lord.

With a pop, Rhett pulls them out of his mouth. His pink tongue licks over his lips while he envelops me into him, our bodies flush and hearts beating so frantically that with our closeness it feels like one long, endless pulse between us.

Ghosting his lips over mine, he murmurs, “You taste so damn good,” before kissing me.

His tongue swirls with mine as he grinds into me once more and then eases himself out with a hiss. Turning me to face him, he cups my face, deepening our kiss. When he pulls back, his eyes trail down my body in quiet, careful appraisal.

“Fuck, Avery, did I hurt you?” His voice is low, too quiet.

“No.”

“Let me see.”

His fingers trace the red marks on my hips where he gripped me. Then the bite on my shoulder that’s still throbbing in the best way. The popped buttons on my dress and my chafed skin on my chest from the beam.

Rhett presses featherlight kisses to every place he left his mark, bathing me in his affection.

No one has ever checked on me after. No one has ever cared whether they left damage behind.

“You’re okay?” he asks again, his mouth still against my shoulder.

“I’m better than okay, Doc.”

All I can do is savor his taste, mingled with mine so that it’s ours. And I don’t care how crude the moment is, I want to live in it forever. Me and him. After all that’s happened. The lives we’ve lived before each other. I think that fate always had a plan for us. And no matter what, I’m not giving up. I’m not letting go.

Rhett Reynolds is mine, and I won’t stop fighting until we have everything we’ve ever wanted. Everything I’ve ever dreamed of. Everything he promised.

CHAPTER 28

RHETT

Dinner arrives as I’m getting in the house, needing a shower after making sure the stables are all taken care of for the long weekend…among other things. There’s enough fresh hay in each of the stalls to last through until we return on Monday, and I’ve left the feed within easy reach in case Jo decides she needs to meddle. Which I know she will if we’re not here, even if Rowan has asked Jesse to drop by with Alison and the girls while we’re away to keep her demons from making work of her idle mind.

“Thanks,” I tell the pizza guy as he takes the tip I pull from my wallet that I left on the entry console and grab the pizza boxes from him before I lock up the front door for the night.

Although I still haven’t talked to Avery about going to DC this weekend, I’m hoping she’ll want to come too. As much as I don’t want to involve her as I look into the cause of Robert’s death, I’m hoping that she can help me get the answers I need from his doctor. That needle bruise is bugging the shit out of me, and given that Dr. Haas hasn’t replied to the last email I sent asking if there was something missing from the notes he sent over…I don’t have a good feeling about it.
