“I have also performed the ritual to trace my true mate, and I have found her. Mating with her will certainly restore my powers,” I say with certainty. “I have been made aware that my true mate resides in Augusta, as an established witch within the coven.”
The room goes quiet, and Amalia just continues staring at me with a level expression. I stifle the urge to look at Hannah, but I can feel her shock as if it is my own.
“And considering that the wolves of Bitterroot Valley have an advantage over everyone else in this room, with our experience, our witches, our close link to the south of the valley, and our natural mystical abilities, I propose a deal with Sister Amalia and the coven, in exchange for an alliance with the packs I represent. We’ve already given up our prisoner, Marcus Hale, for the witches to interrogate. If you succeed, you will gain invaluable information that will help in this war.”
There’s a glint of amusement that flashes through Amalia’s eyes, as if she’s been waiting for this.
“Name your condition, Alpha Conan,” she says calmly.
“I will marry the August Moon witch by the end of tomorrow night upon the full moon, and return with her to Bitterroot Valley.”
Sister Amalia smirks. “And what is the name of the witch you want as your bride, Alpha Conan?”
I turn to the back of the room, finding Hannah staring at me, her face pale.
“My true mate is Hannah. Hannah Young.”
A ripple of shock silences the room, but Amalia takes the lead and walks over to me.
“Then it is settled, Alpha Conan. In exchange for an alliance with the Bitterroot packs, and for all of your knowledge and help with fighting the demons, you will marry Hannah Young tomorrow.” She smiles at me. “I believe this is a fair arrangement, and if all other packs are in agreement, we can stop the demons together.”
I nod at her and see that the other alphas are very intrigued by this new development, but not hesitant to proceed with the alliance. After all, the Bitterroot Valley packs have the obvious advantage.
And now, I have what I want.
Hannah.
Chapter 6 - Hannah
It all happens so quickly.
One moment, I’m a single mother, a witch in the August Moon Circle.
Next, I’m betrothed to the alpha of the Iron Breath Pack.
Conan Becker.
From his speech at last night’s conference meeting, it was evident that Conan believes he has found his true mate—a mate who had been revealed to him in a ritual performed by the valley’s research team.
I don’t buy it.
“How could you agree to this, Sister Amalia?” I ask as soon as Amalia walks in. I don’t even give her a chance to breathe, let alone close the door behind her, before I’m charging forward.
She turns around calmly and throws me a smile, sizing me up from head to toe, her eyes sparkling with wonder. “You look stunning, Hannah,” she breathes in awe of the white gown she instructed me to wear. She comes sauntering forward, hands reaching out toward my hair. “Would you like me to braid your hair? It always looks particularly beautiful in a fish-plait.”
“Sister Amalia…” I groan as she slides her fingers through my hair before taking my hand and leading me to the bedroom.
“Is Clarissa with Milly?” she throws over her shoulder casually, and I roll my eyes in frustration.
“Yes, she’s with Milly.” I cross my arms as soon as we’re in the bedroom, and she releases my hand. “You’re not answering my question, Sister.”
Amalia pulls out the vanity chair and points to the seat. “Sit down. Let me braid your hair. We do not have much time.”
“Sister Amalia…” I groan, and she sighs.
“Please sit down, Hannah. We will talk then.”
As soon as I’m seated, she runs the brush through my hair, meeting my eyes in the mirror.
