The simple statement shouldn’t warm my heart as much as it does, but as someone who didn’t have the typical experience of a supportive and caring nuclear family, that small statement means more to me than the awards I’ve been given over the years. I have accolades and awards in droves, but people? That’s somewhat new.

I have people. Aisha. Walker and Viv. Savannah. Tara. Kelly. Mason. Christine.

I belong to people.

And maybe, just maybe, I can add Ryan to that list.

CHAPTER FOURTEEN

Harlow

Hi, Ryan. I just spoke with Walker. I am in Colorado consulting on a case, but I’m working on getting back as soon as I can. I can’t imagine how you’re doing, but I wanted to let you know I’m thinking of you and here if you need anything.

Me

Thanks, Harlow. It’s… I just can’t even fathom who would take her?? This can’t be real, like she has to come home. Her kids need her. Theo needs her. We all need her.

Harlow

I know, and I know we will all do everything we can to bring her home.

Me

Liam is very confident, so that helps.

Harlow

If push comes to shove, betting on your brother is always a good bet.

Me

I know, he’s all spy guy awesome, but I feel like I can’t help in any meaningful way unless you count pacing around my kitchen.

Harlow

Are you alone, or do you have someone with you?

Me

I have Liam and his whole crew in my kitchen. Theo is alternating between breathing down their necks or walking behind my house. Finn just ran to get some pizzas for everyone.

Harlow

Keep me in the loop. And unless I’m in the air, if you need to talk, you can always call too. Whatever you need, Ryan.

CHAPTER FIFTEEN

Over the last two months, Ryan and I have continued to text and we even spoke on the phone a few times, but work has kept me busy and traveling more than usual. However, when Walker called to tell me Savannah was missing, I was consulting on a case in Colorado and tried to get back to Tennessee as fast as possible, but by the time I landed, she was already home safe and sound.
